Conference on Cyprus starts in Crans-Montana in the presence of UN Secretary-General

The morning session of the 8th day of the Conference on Cyprus started at 12.00pm Cyprus time (9.00am GMT) in the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, in Switzerland, in the presence of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci was first to arrive in the place where the Conference is taking place, followed a few minutes later by the President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades. Neither made any statements while entering.

Other participants followed suit, including Guterres, the Foreign Ministers of Greece and Turkey, Nikos Kotzias and Mevlut Cavusoglu respectively, and the British Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Sir Alan Duncan, without talking to the Press.

EU High Representative and Commission Vice President Federica Mogherini said upon her arrival at the Conference Center that the EU is here to fully support and accompany this process and we are hoping for the best for today.

Mogherini said she arrived in the Swiss resort to support the work of the UN, of the Secretary General, and of the Special Envoy, Espen Barth Eide. I have seen that there is political will she said. Asked by reporters if she is optimistic, Mogheriuni replied I am always optimistic.

UN-facilitated peace talks began in Crans-Montana on June 28 to help find a negotiated settlement that would reunify Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
