Foreign Ministry welcomes resolution approving renewal of UNFICYP mandate

The Foreign Ministry welcomes the unanimous decision of the Security Council to renew on Thursday UNFICYP’s mandate until 31st January 2019. The Security Council approved resolution 2430 renewing UNFICYP’s mandate. Americans were trying until the last moment to persuade other members of the UN Security Council to support some of their views regarding the contents of the Council for the renewal of UNFICYP’s mandate.

UN Secretary General to decide on his next steps on Cyprus after Lute’s return to New York

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will decide on his next steps on the Cyprus issue after the return of his Special Envoy Jane Hall Lut to New York, UN Secretary-General spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a regular briefing to the press at the United Nations headquarters on Thursday.

Noting that the the Security Council unanimously voted to extend the mandate of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) until January 31, 2019, Dujarric added that we obviously welcome the fact that the mandate was renewed.

Cypriot firefighters return from tragedy-stricken Greece, having seen a biblical disaster

The Cypriot firefighters, who spent almost three days in fire�stricken Greece assisting their Greek colleagues in the efforts to combat the wildfires that ravaged Attica, returned home last night having witnessed what they described as biblical disaster. A total of 64 people, firefighters from the Fire Department and the Forest Department, officers from the Civil Defence Department and the Ambulance Service, as well as the two fire trucks returned to Cyprus on Thursday evening. President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades has sent letters of condolences to Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos regarding the deadly fires in Greece, also informing them on decisions taken by the Council of Ministers to support the victims. Greece, Cyprus, Armenia and Egypt urge their diaspora to support fire victims in Greece.

One thousand boxes with daily necessities to be sent to Greece on Saturday

One thousand boxes with products of daily necessities, donated by Cypriots, will be handed over to the Co-ordinating Center of the Attica region in Greece, tomorrow, Commissioner for Volunteerism and Non-Governmental Organizations, Yannis Yiannakis, has told CNA. Yiannaki, who will travel tomorrow to Greece, said that apart from the 1,000 boxes, they also collected clothes to be sent to the fire-stricken Greeks, as well as tones of pharmaceuticals. He also said he will convey a message from the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades regarding the measures taken by the government of Cyprus to support those affected.

Trade Unions endorse VRS for 900 employees in the CCB

Trade Unions PEO, SEK and PASYDY endorsed on Thursday a voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) for 900 employees of the state-owned Cyprus Cooperative Bank (CCB) in the context of a deal for the transfer of the CCB’s performing operations to Hellenic Bank. The three trade unions held a joint conference today, analysing a revised VRS submitted yesterday by the CCB board. The VRS provide for tax-free compensation up to Euros 180.000

President Anastasiades presents overseas Cypriots with medals for outstanding service

Teacher Andria Zafeirakos, restaurant owner Andreas Mavrommatis and scientist Kypros Nicolaides were presented on Thursday with medals for outstanding service to their home country. The medals were presented by President Nicos Anastasiades during a ceremony held at the Presidential Palace.

US Congressmen praise US-Cyprus relations and pledge to continue supporting the struggle for a Cyprus solution

Influential US Congressmen, Senators and Members of the House of Representatives, have praised US-Cyprus relations, pointing out that Cyprus is a strong ally to the US and pledging to continue to offer their support for a solution and the reunification of the island, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. They also said that that Turkey may be a NATO partner but it is no real ally, adding that it is time that US policies reflect that. The Members of the Congress sent video messages which were shown during the morning deliberations of the Conference of Overseas Cypriots held in Nicosia. Cyprus is a valuable partner and strategic ally, US Congressman Gus Bilirakis has said on Wednesday and led a Special Order in support of Cyprus in the House of Representatives.

Cyprus Police contribute to the dismantling of an international cartel of online fraud

The Cyprus Police, acting in concert with EUROPOL and EUROJUST, have managed to dismantle an international cartel said to be involved in tens of thousands of online fraud cases, worth more than 18 million euro. According to an announcement issued here today by the Cyprus Police, the international operation, with the code name Warenagent, took place in nine European countries and concluded with the arrest in Cyprus of the head of the cartel. Immediately after he was arrested, another 14 people were arrested in another eight European countries. All the arrests took place in June, however the investigations into the case continued until the past few days.

Cyprus, Greece and Armenia to hold four joint events on diaspora

Cyprus, Greece and Armenia will hold four joint events in relation to diaspora in the next few months, as announced after the meeting of the three countries officials on diaspora issues Thursday. In August, Greece will host three medical students from the three countries diaspora in Crete, to discuss bioethics issues. A major cultural event of the three country’s diaspora is also scheduled for October in Paris.In December, Armenia will host another trilateral event on corruption issues, while in February a fourth event will be hosted by the three countries diaspora in Nicosia.

President receives credentials of new Ambassadors of Switzerland and Moldova

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades received on Thursday the credentials of new Ambassadors to the Republic of Cyprus from Switzerland and Moldova. Presenting his credentials, Ambassador of the Swiss Confederation to the Republic of Cyprus, Pierre-Yves Fux, expressed hope that “a reunification of Cyprus and the end of the occupation will become a reality in the near future”.
