The well-established practice of convening the Southern EU Countries Summits provides a unique and ideal setting for uniting our best ideas and strengths and in this way enables us to make a substantial contribution to the formation and advancement of innovative, comprehensive and sound European solutions and policies, President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades said in a message posted on the PIO website about the summit, that will be hosted in Nicosia on January 29. A press conference was held on Wednesday ahead of the summit.

Lute expected to return to the island in “near future”, Spehar says

Foreign Minister, Nikos Christodoulides, stressed on Wednesday that there can be no a la carte approach as regards the international law implementation. Christodoulides was invited to comment a report published by Turkish newspaper “Yeni Safak” which said that the Turkish navy had blocked the route of seven ships from various countries, which agreed with the Republic of Cyprus to carry out natural gas explorations to the west of Cyprus.

President says Cyprus has been targeted by the EU over its passport scheme

President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades has said that Cyprus has been targeted by the EU over its investment programme in the framework of which non�Cypriot entrepreneurs, investors and members of their families are granted the Cypriot citizenship. Cyprus has granted only 0.3% of the total citizenships that have been granted across the EU, the President said.

EOKA veterans reach out of court settlement with UK Government

A full and final out of court settlement has been reached between the UK Government and 33 veteran EOKA fighters, who were pursuing damages for the tortures they suffered in the hands of the colonial forces during the Liberation Struggle of 1955-59. Meanwhile, the Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus has welcomed the statement by the United Kingdom regarding the treatment of fighters during the EOKA struggle for independence from British colonial rule, noting that this is a courageous act on behalf of the UK.

?U Commission VP Katainen to visit Cyprus

EU Commission Vice President responsible for Jobs, Growth, Investment and Competitiveness Jyrki Katainen will visit Cyprus on January 27-28. According to a press release issued by representation of the Commission in Cyprus, during his visit, Katainen will be received by President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades and will meet with House of Representatives President Demetris Syllouris.

Nights spent in Cyprus in touristic accommodations rise by 3.6% in 2018, says Eurostat

In 2018, the number of nights spent in tourist accommodation establishments in the European Union (EU) is expected to have reached more than 3.1 billion, up by 2.2% compared with 2017. According to Eurostat, in Cyprus 17.4 thousand nights were spent in tourist accommodation establishments for 2018 (95% or 16.5 thousand by non-residents), an increase of 3.6% since 2017.
