Council of political leaders under President Anastasiades rejects Akincis proposal for natural resources

The Council of leaders of the political parties in Cyprus, which convened on Tuesday under President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades, rejected a proposal by Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci for the co-management of the natural resources, noting that it deviates from the essence, which is the resumption of substantive negotiations with the aim to reach a viable and functional solution to the Cyprus problem. A government source said the response to the proposal is already being drafted.

President Anastasiades congratulates Ursula von der Leyen

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades congratulated new President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. The President conveyed his wishes for a successful and productive term in a message on twitter, on Tuesday evening. He also said that he is looking forward to work closely with von der Leyen for the future development of Europe.

The US express similar concerns with Europeans over Turkey’s activity off Cyprus

The United States express concerns over Turkey’s activity in the waters off Cyprus, State Department Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said. Similarly to the Europeans, we’ve expressed deep concerns over Turkey’s assertions that it is going to continue to drill in these waters off of Cyprus she said. Ortagus pointed to the statement released on July 9 on this issue and repeated that the US similarly share the concern that the Europeans have displayed.

Foreign Minister inaugurates UK-Cypriot diaspora Economic Diplomacy roundtable

Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Christodoulides inaugurated the first UK-Cypriot Diaspora Economic Diplomacy Roundtable in London on Tuesday morning, within the framework of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Economic Diplomacy Strategy. The roundtable is a joint initiative between the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK, the High Commission of Cyprus in the UK and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus. Under Christodoulides, Economic Diplomacy has been identified as one of the main pillars of Cyprus’ foreign policy.

Expenditure for environmental protection activities in industry in 2017 shows increase

Expenditure for environmental protection activities in industry in 2017 recorded an increase compared to 2016. On the basis of the results of a survey carried out by the Statistical Service of Cyprus, the total expenditure for environmental protection activities in industry in 2017 is estimated at Euros 29,8 million, compared to Euros 24,2 million in 2016 and corresponds to 0,15% of the Gross Domestic Product.

Euro area international trade in goods hits surplus of Euros 23.0 bn, -Euros 1.9bn deficit in Cyprus

The first estimate for euro area (EA19) exports of goods to the rest of the world in May 2019 was Euros 203.4 billion, an increase of 7.1% compared with May 2018 (Euros 189.9 bn), according to Eurostat, the statistical service of the EU. The total value of Cyprus exports for the reference period was Euros 1.4 billion a -31% drop compared to the same period of 2019 (Euros 0.8 billion to the EU, or 75% increase and Euros 0.6 billion to the rest of the world or -63% decrease).
