Cyprus concerned with serious escalation of situation in Gaza

The Republic of Cyprus maintains the position that the final status of Jerusalem is to be determined through negotiations, noting that it is concerned over the serious escalation of the situation in Gaza and that further loss of life must be avoided. The Republic of Cyprus is concerned with the “serious escalation of the situation in Gaza resulting in dozens of Palestinians killed and hundreds injured. Further loss of life must be avoided and we call on all to demonstrate utmost restraint, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press statement.

Anastasiades – Tusk hold telephone conversation

President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades held a telephone convesation on Monday with President of the European Council Donald Tusk. According to a tweet by Deputy Spokeswoman of the Government of Cyprus, Klelia Vasiliou, they discussed about the upcoming EU – Western Balcans Summit.

New High Commissioner thanks Zimbabwe for support in Cyprus issue

Cyprus’ new High Commissioner to Zimbabwe, based in Pretoria, Yiannis Iacovou has expressed gratitude to the President of the country, Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, for his stance in favour of a Cyprus settlement, in the framework of UN Security Council resolutions, supporting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.

Presidential Commissioner briefs AHI delegation on missing persons issue

Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou has asked the American Hellenic Institutes delegation (AHI) to make every effort so that US decision-making centers promote initiatives and actions that will help solve the humanitarian problem of the missing persons in Cyprus. Photiou also recalled that the list of the missing persons includes five Cypriots with American citizenship.

Non-performing loans spike as IFRS 9 enters in to force

Non-performing exposures (NPEs) in the Cyprus banking system jumped up by Euros 1.5 billion in January 2018, as International Financial Reporting Standard 9 entered in to force on January 1 this year. According to data published by the Central Bank of Cyprus, NPEs at January 31 of 2018 amounted to Euros 22.11 billion compared with Euros 20.57 in end-December 2017.

Cypriot students win four medals in ISF World Schools Games

The Cypriot team returned from ISF World Schools Games Gymnasiade with four medals, two gold, one silver and one bronze, new national records and other distinctions. In a press release, the Ministry of Education and Culture said that once more Cyprus achieved great success at the 2018 World Schools Games Gymnasiade in Casablanca, Morocco, the worlds largest school event which is held every two years.
