We cannot become the puppet of a third country, President Anastasiades stresses

Cyprus President NicosAnastasiades has stressed that a settlement of the Cyprus problem that would turn the country into the puppet of a third country cannot be accepted, adding that it is inconceivable that a solution will provide for guarantees and the presence of troops, as these violate every democratic principle.

Government expects UNFICYP mandate to be renewed, Spokesman says

The government expects that the UN peace-keeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) mandate will be renewed later this month by the UN Security Council, Government Spokesman ProdromosProdromou said on Sunday. It would be an absolute paradox if things regarding UNFICYP changed, while an effort for the resumption of the negotiations for a Cyprus settlement is underway by the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, through his envoy Jane Holl Lute, he pointed out.

Presidential Commissioner says situation regarding the discovery of missing persons remains is tragic

Presidential Commissioner PhotisPhotiou has described the situation regarding the discovery of the remains of persons missing since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974 as tragic. He went on to say that during 2018 “the remains of 10-11 missing persons were discovered, 2 – 3 bones of every missing person,” adding that if the situation continues as it is now, then things will be very difficult.
