China considers Cyprus a “strategic partner”

China considers Cyprus a strategic partner, pledged President Xi Jinping, during a meeting in Beijing with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades, expressing at the same time its unwavering support in efforts for a solkution to the Cyprus problem. A Cyprus Presidency statement said that during the meeting, the excellent political relations between the two countries were reconfirmed while bilateral agreements were signed. Today the President attended the Belt and Road Forum.

Fund Managers take the lion’s share in Cyprus’ double bond issue

Fund Managers took the lion’s shares in yesterday double EMTN bond amounting to Euros 1.25 billion by Cyprus, comprising a 5-year EMTN note and a landmark 30-year note.

According to data released by the Finance Ministry’s Public Dent Management Office (PDMO), the transaction attracted offers exceeding Euros 11 billion (Euros 4.8 bl for the 5-year and Euros 6.3 bl for the 30-year), which constitutes a new record demand for Cypriot bonds since the island’s return to international capital markets in 2014.

Employment rate in Europe rises to 73.2% for 2018, 73.9% in Cyprus, 59.5% in Greece

In 2018, the employment rate of people aged 20 to 64 in the European Union (EU) stood at 73.2%, up compared with 2017 (72.2%), according to the 2018 results of the European Labour Force Survey, published by Eurostat. According to Eurostat, the employment rate for men hit 79.0% in 2018, and has increased steadily since 2013. As for women, their employment rate has continuously risen since 2010 to reach 67.4% in 2018. Similarly, the employment rate of persons aged 55 to 64 in the EU has grown steadily, from 38.4% in 2002 to 58.7% in 2018.

Protection status to 333,400 asylum seekers in the EU 2018

The 28 Member States of the European Union (EU) granted protection status to nearly 333, 400 asylum seekers in 2018, down by almost 40% from 2017 (533 000). In addition to these, the EU Member States received over 24 800 resettled refugees. The largest group of beneficiaries of protection status in the EU in 2018 remained citizens of Syria (96 100 persons, or 29% of the total number of persons granted protection status in the EU Member States), followed by citizens of Afghanistan (53 500 or 16%) and those of Iraq (24 600 or 7%).

CyCSO Ex.Director: Building cybersecurity culture equally beneficial to technical countermeasures against cyberthreats

The human factor and the cybersecurity culture are perhaps more important than the technical countermeasures taken and informed citizens and workers remain the best protection shield, CyCSO -Cyprus Cybersecurity Organization- Executive Director Constantinos Tsiourtos has told Cyprus News Agency. In an interview with CNA, Tsiourtos points out, once again, the need for citizens to be aware and well-informed. Tsiourtos spoke to our agency on the recent adoption by the European Parliament of the new European Cybersecurity Act aiming at further enhancing cybersecurity across Europe.

Cyprus industrial output rose in February

Industrial production in Cyprus presented a year-on-year increase in February.

The Statistical Service said on Thursday that the Index of Industrial Production reached 117,7 units (base 2015=100), in February 2019, recording an increase of 5.4% compared with February 2018.

Between January � February 2019, the index rose by 6.5% compared with the corresponding period of the previous year, according to Cystat.

Retail trade turnover up in February

Cyprus’s retail trade turnover grew significantly year on year in February, the Statistical Service said on Thursday. Cystat provisional estimates showed that the Turnover Value Index of Retail Trade increased by 3.4% in February 2019 compared with the corresponding month of the previous year and reached 97,0 units (base 2015=100). Between January-February 2019 the index is estimated to have recorded an increase of 4.2% compared with the same period of 2018.
