Interim solution for British Bases in Cyprus in case of hard Brexit, says Foreign Minister

Cyprus Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides on Thursday said that in case the UK leaves the EU without an agreement, an interim solution will be applied for the British Bases on the island. He said that this matter has been chosen, among others, by the EU, for such a solution to be applied.

Speaking to the press after a meeting of the Cabinet, the Minister said that he had the chance to brief the Council of Ministers on the latest developments regarding Brexit, adding that all scenarios are likely to take place and in such case, the preparation that has started in October 2017 for a hard Brexit, has now been intensified.

House Speaker travels to Dublin for event on Dails 100th year celebration

House Speaker Dimitris Syllouris travels to Dublin on Saturday for an event to mark the Irish Parliament, Dail, 100th year celebrations, following an invitation by Sean A� Fearghail, the chairperson of Dail A�ireann. The celebrations include a joint meeting of the Dail Eireann and the Seanad A�ireann ( Senate) which will be addressed by the Presiden of Ireland, Michael Higgins. The Heads of Parliaments who will attend the meeting, will also be received by the Prime Minister Leo Varadkar.

Romanian Presidency of the Council of the EU focused on cohesion

The priorities of the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the EU during the first semester of 2019 were presented on Thursday by Daniela Sezonov-?ane, Charge d affaires at the Romanian Embassy in Nicosia. The central theme of the Romanian Presidency is Cohesion as a common European value, she said, speaking at a press conference at the House of the EU. In order to advance further we need to understand and promote cohesion in all its dimensions, the political, the economic and the social dimension, she noted.

Tourist arrivals hit new high in 2018

Tourists arrivals hit new record in 2018, reaching 3,938,625 compared to 3,652,073 in the corresponding period of 2017, recording an increase of 7.7%. On the basis of the results of the Passengers Survey released Thursday by the Statistical Service of Cyprus, arrivals of tourists reached 106,563 in December 2018 compared to 98,924 in December 2017, recording an increase of 7.7%. December 2018 had the highest volume of tourist arrivals ever recorded in Cyprus during the specific month. Residents of Cyprus who returned from a trip abroad in December 2018 reached 122,149 compared to 110,849 in the corresponding month last year, recording an increase of 10.2%.

Cyprus Post seeking ways to start delivering packages with drones

The Cyprus Post have been seeking ways to utilise unmanned drones to deliver parcels of up to four kilos to the recipient, Andreas Gregoriou, Director of the Department of Postal Services, has told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA). To that end, the Department is in contact with the University of Cyprus KIOS Research Centre, according to Gregoriou.

Harmonized Inflation up by 0.8% in 2018

Harmonized Inflation increased by 0.8% in 2018 compared to 2017, according to data released Thursday by the Statistical Service of Cyprus. In December 2018 the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) increased by 1% compared to December 2017, while compared to November 2018 the HICP decreased by 0.9%.)

The study of space is the future, the Cypriot scientist, who shedlight on the secrets of Jupiter, the larger planet of our solar system, has told CNA. Dr Georgios Nicolaou, who has analyzed the data of the NASA New Horizons mission, is a scientific member of the Cyprus Space Exploration Organization (CSEO) and has been working abroad for years on missions exploring our Solar System.
