UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres continues to see what influence the UN can have to bring the Cyprus talks forward, a UN official has said. Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Farhan Haq, replying to a journalists question as to how much the question of Cyprus is on Guterres agenda this year, said that “he continues to be advised, including from Elizabeth Spehar who is our senior official currently dealing with the Cyprus file about all the events, and he continues to see what influence we can have to bring the talks forward.”

President assures of his readiness to engage in talks on the internal aspects of the Cyprus problem

President Nicos Anastasiades has assured of his determination and readiness to continue the UN peace talks on a Cyprus solution, at least on the internal aspects of the Cyprus problem. In an interview with the Athens News Agency (AMNA) the President pointed out once again that a new conference on Cyprus must be well prepared. If Turkeys positions are not known and more specifically if they do not fall within the parameters set out by the UN Secretary General, this new attempt will lead once again to failure, the President stressed.

Minister of Energy announces gas discovery at Calypso well of Cyprus’ block 6

Energy Minister Yiorgos Lakkotrypis announced Thursday that the consortium of Italy’s ENI and France’s Total had discovered an extended gas column demonstrating the existence of a natural gas deposit at Calypso well of Cyprus’ offshore block 6. Lakkotrypis said that at present no specific volumes could be announced and that detailed geophysical and geological studies and further work on surveys and assessments will be carried out. As he said more time is needed to give an assessment of the volumes, but what’s important is that there’s a natural gas discovery.

Italy pledges to continue supporting the dialogue for a Cyprus solution

Italy’s President, Sergio Mattarella, in a congratulatory message to re-elected President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, pledges his country’s determination to continue supporting the dialogue for a Cyprus settlement. Mattarela sent a congratulatory message to President Anastasiades on his re-election. Anastasiades received a message from the Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev as well.

Trade deficit increases 18.6% in eleven months

Trade deficit for the period January-November 2017 recorded an increase of 18.6% for the period January-November 2017 compared to the corresponding period of 2016. According to data released Thursday by the Statistical Service of Cyprus trade deficit was Euros 4.659,3 mn in January-November 2017 compared to Euros 3,929.4 mn in the corresponding period of 2016.

Registration of saloon cars increases by 21% in January 2018

January 2018 was the best January in terms of passenger saloon cars registrations since 2008, according to data released Thursday by Statistical Service of Cyprus. In addition, January 2018 was the second-best month in saloon registrations since July 2009.
