Turkey continues to obstruct the work of CMP, Presidential Commissioner tells CNA

Ankara continues to put obstacles to the work of the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) in Turkish-occupied Cyprus, even in areas where there is agreement to search for missing persons, says Presidential Commissioner Fotis Fotiou. In 2018, CMP received permission to proceed with excavations in agreed military zones in the occupied areas only last December, a month before the end of the year, Fotiou told CNA.

Political Director of British Foreign Office holds contacts in Cyprus

The Political Director of the British Foreign Office, Richard Moore, paid a visit to Cyprus on Friday, for discussions with the Cypriot Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides, the Greek Cypriot negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, on a range of issues including Brexit, regional relations and the Cyprus settlement, the British High Commission in Nicosia said on its twitter account.

Cyprus aims to maintain the same number of tourists as in 2018, says Deputy Minister for Tourism

Deputy Minister for Tourism Savvas Perdios said Friday that Cyprus is aiming to maintain the same numbers of tourists as in the previous year with the right marketing and joint efforts by all stakeholders in the tourism industry. Cyprus recorded the highest ever number of tourist arrivals in 2018, approaching 4 million, and with revenues that exceeded 2.7 billion euros.

Meanwhile a Trilateral meeting on tourism took place in Berlin between Cyprus, Greece and Egypt.

Justice Minister I.Nikolaou raises issue of radicalized returning foreign fighters during JHA Council

The question of possible radicalized returning foreign fighters, arriving through the migratory routes to Cyprus, as well as the use of the EU services databases to address this risk, was raised by the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Cyprus Ionas Nicolaou, during the Justice and Home Affairs Council, held in Brussels. Refugees need support but there are limits, majority of Cypriots believes according to a study.

Human rights, future of Europe, security, concern those registered on Elections platform

Human rights, issues regarding the youth, the future of Europe, security and ecology are the issues which concern the people who have registered from Cyprus on the European Parliament’s online platform This time I am voting. The platform functions in 24 languages with a view to inform people and raise their awareness about the forthcoming European elections. Up until March 4, a total of 194,200 citizens were registered on the platform, out of which approximately 6400 were registered from Cyprus.

Chairman of Lower House of Parliament of Kazakhstan extends invitation to Syllouris for ASEM

The President of the House of Representatives, Dimitris Syllouris, received Friday the Ambassador of Kazakhstan in Cyprus (based in Tel Aviv) on Doulat Kuanyshev. The Ambassador, according to a press release by the Parliament, extended an invitation to Syllouris by the Nurlan Nigmatulin, Chairman of the Lower House of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan to attend the 4th ASEM Meeting to be held in Astana, between 23-24 September 2019.

Series of actions to turn 2019 into landmark year for gender equality, Foreign Ministry says

The implementation of a series of actions by the Foreign Ministry will turn 2019 into a landmark year in the efforts of the Ministry to strengthen the Republic of Cypruss ability to contribute effectively in accelerating progress towards gender equality across all sectors. A press release by the Ministry o the occassion of the International Women’s Day, says that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, recognizing that the violation and suppression of womens rights, and sex-based discrimination is a universal problem with negative socio-economic consequences and implications, has decided to mainstream the Gender Dimension into its foreign policy.

GDP growth rate during fourth quarter of 2018 estimated at +3.8%

?he GDP growth rate in real terms during the fourth quarter of 2018 is positive and estimated at +3.8% over the corresponding quarter of 2017, according to figures puplished by the Statiscal Service. Registrations of motor vehicles decreased by 3,1% ?n January-February 2019.
