President reiterates readiness for resumption of UN talks for a Cyprus settlement

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades reiterated his readiness to engage in a fresh round of UN-brokered talks from where they left off in the previous round in Crans Montana, Switzerland. In an interview with the Cyprus daily O Phileleftheros (the liberal) he said he reiterated his position in a letter to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. On this occasion, I reiterated what I have stressed in a series of meetings. I stressed my readiness for the resumption of the dialogue from where it left off in Crans Montana since I believe that this is the only way to overcome problems, Anastasiades said.

EC President Tusk to represent President Anastasiades at Sundays Special meeting of the European Council

European Council President Donald Tusk will represent Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades at Sunday’s special meeting of the European Council after the latter underwent surgery for a fractured hip on Saturday.

Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou told reporters that after consultations made by the Foreign Minister, the President of the European Council Mr. Donald Tusk will represent the President of the Republic at the meeting where the leaders’ talks will continue on nominations for the EUs top jobs.

Anastasiades and Akinci agree to consult with each other on next steps to the Cyprus problem

Cyprus President and Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci agreed on Saturday to hold consultations on the next steps to the Cyprus problem, Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou has said. According to a written statement issued by Prodromou, the agreement was reached over a telephone conversation when Akinci called Anastasiades to wish him speedy recovery, after the accident President Anastasiades had earlier today in Limassol that resulted in fractured right hip.

President Anastasiades undergoes operation for hip fracture, expected to resume his duties in 2-3 weeks

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades underwent surgery after fracturing his right hip during a fall on Saturday in Limassol. In statements to the press after the surgery at the Mediterranean Hospital in Limassol Saturday afternoon, Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou said the operation was successful and the President is expected to resume his duties in about two to three weeks. Surgeon Dr. Andreas Panagiotou, said the operation was performed without any complications and the President was in a good mood and back in his room. He will resume his duties in 2-3 weeks. For the next 48 hours, no visitors will be allowed.

Greek Cypriot negotiator in New York for contacts ahead of UNSC vote for UNFICYP

Greek Cypriot negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis carries out contacts in New York in a bid to support the Cypriot permanent representation to the UN in view of the Secretary-General’s report on the UN Peace Keeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and the ensuing vote to the Security Council for the renewal of UNFICYP’s mandate in end-June. The UNSG’s report is expected to be issued on July 10 while the UNSC monthly programme of work will be announced on Monday by Peru, the holder of the Council’s presidency.
