Cyprus Meteorology Department issues yellow thunderstorm warning

Cyprus Meteorology Department has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms early on Wednesday morning.

The department warns that thunderstorms, probably accompanied by hail, are expected to affect the area. In the meantime, the police have also announced that all roads leading to Troodosmountain square and its highest peak, Olympus, are open only for four-wheel drive vehicles or vehicles with anti-skid snow chains. Drivers are urged to be particularly careful, to drive in low speed, keep their distance from other vehicles and keep their headlights on.

Cypriot bonds account for 4% of ECB’s public asset holdings, according to DBRS

A DBRS credit agency insights newsletter which takes a look into the European Central Bank’s asset purchase programme reports that Cypriot government debt securities account for only 4% of Euros 2.1 trillion public sector asset holdings the ECB had at the end of 2018. The size of PSPP holdings varies across countries, from around 4% of Cypriot government debt securities, as Cyprus only participated in the programme for a few months, to 18% of Italian securities, 22% of Portuguese securities, 25% of Spanish securities, and 32% of German government outstanding debt securities, below the issuer limit of 33%, the ratings agency says.

Cyprus Symphony Orchestra starts 2019 with Strauss and Tchaikovsky

The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra has chosen to start its new year performances with Strauss and Tchaikovsky.

In a press release on its website the Orchestra announces that it has chosen Joseph’s Winter Joy Polka and Johann’s Emperor Waltz, along with excerpts of Tchaikovsky’s three ballets and three excerpts from his opera Eugene Onegin with the CySO and conductor Jens Georg Bachmann joined by Paphos-based mezzo Anastasia MaximovaGonsales Moreau. Music lovers will have the opportunity to enjoy the concert on January 16, 17 and 18 in Strovolos, Pafos and Limassol respectively.

Rainfall in Cyprus at 169% of usual in December

Average rainfall in the government-controlled areas of Cyprus in December reached 169% of usual rainfall for the month, preliminary data released by the Cyprus Meteorological Service on Wednesday show. According to the data from October 1st 2018 to January 1, 2019 total rainfall reached 284,2 millimetres which corresponds to 148% of the total usual quantity of rainfall for the same period.
