President meets with Spehar soon to assess prospects for resumption of Cyprus talks

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades announced on Friday that next week he will meet with the UN Secretary Generals Special Representative in Cyprus Elizabeth Spehar to assess the prospects for the resumption of the Cyprus reunification talks. Speaking to the press on Friday, following a reception at the Presidential Palace where citizens had the chance to congratulate him on his re-election, the President said that during the meeting they will examine whether there are prospects that could give hope for a dialogue, on the correct basis, on what has been agreed.

House Speaker says Parliament has the capabilities to tackle expectations of the future

President of the House of Representatives Demetris Syllouris has said the House has the capabilities and vision to tackle the expectations of the future and needs to be present in the international arena to promote Cyprus’ geopolitical position and importance. Syllouris was addressing an event hosted by the Embassy of Cyprus and the Cypriot overseas organisations in Athens on the role of the House of Representatives in modern times and the necessary reforms. In the context of his visit Syllouris met with Greeces President Prokopis Pavlopoulos and his counterpart in the Hellenic Parliament Nikos Voutsis, as well as Greeces Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias.

Trade deficit up by Euros 727 mn in 2017, imports rise to Euros 8.03 bn

Cyprus trade deficit increased by Euros 727 mn approximately in 2017, compared to the year before, as a result of a significant increase in imports mainly from third countries, according to preliminary estimates of the Statistical Service of Cyprus. Cystat figures released on Friday showed that the trade deficit rose to Euros 5.13 bn from Euros 4,40 bn in 2016.

President will soon convene Council of leaders of political parties

Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides has said that the President of the Republic will soon convene the Council of the leaders of the political parties, to discuss the Cyprus issue. Christodoulides, who was replying to journalists questions at the Presidential Palace, yesterday, also said that that most probably the President will announce his decisions next week on his new Cabinet, reiterating that the Presidents aim is a government of broader social acceptance.

Migrant flows to Cyprus to increase dramatically says MEP Theocharous in an interview with CNA

Cypriot Member of the European Parliament Eleni Theocharous of the Group of European Reformers and Conservatives (ECR) expressed the view that migration flows to Cyprus will increase dramatically in the near future. In an interview with CNA Theocharous said that Cyprus is a target in terms of immigration, after the rest of southern Europe have come to a saturation point or have taken measures to address the problem. As she said, that could create a series of problems given the economic crisis that hit the country, as well as other problems.
