President of Cyprus to raise Turkish provocations at informal European Council

President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades is expected to raise at the informal European Council the issue of Turkish provocations in the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ), in light of Turkey’s attempt to drill off the island’s western coast.

According to diplomatic sources, Nicosia focuses its efforts within the framework of the European Union, to deal with Ankara’s moves in maritime areas within Cypriot jurisdiction. Nicosia started to plan ahead a long time ago, in a bid to force Ankara pay the cost for its actions.

Energy issues and Turkey’s provocative actions in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) will be the focus of meetings which Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides will have on Tuesday, May 7, in Paris, where he will pay a one-day visit.

The United States discourages any actions or rhetoric that increases tensions in the region, a U.S. Embassy Spokesperson said in a statement issued here today. According to its longstanding policy, the statement notes, the United States recognizes the right of the Republic of Cyprus to develop its resources in its Exclusive Economic Zone and believes the island’s oil and gas resources should be shared equitably between both communities in the context of an overall settlement.

Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemns Turkey?s attempted illegal drilling in Cyprus’ EEZ

In a strongly worded statement, the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the Turkish decision to attempt to proceed to a drilling in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus.

We call on Turkey to immediately stop its illegal actions, to respect the inalienable rights of the sovereign Republic of Cyprus �which are exercised in the interests of the whole Cypriot people�, and to desist from further actions that undermine the regional stability, as well as the perspectives for the re-opening of the dialogue for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus Problem, states the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

EU High Representative Federica Mogherini called upon Turkey to refrain from illegal actions in the EEZ of Cyprus, show restraint and respect the sovereign rights of the Republic, warning with EU response “in full solidarity with Cyprus”, in a written statement issued earlier today on Turkeys intended drilling activities within the exclusive economic zone of Cyprus.

In an announcement regarding the Turkish drilling in Cyprus’ EEZ, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs says they are deeply concerned about information regarding the escalation of the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean.
