The UN Secretary-General regrets that tensions over hydrocarbons exploration have escalated once again, and emphasizes that all concerned parties should do their utmost to defuse tensions, said a UN SG Spokesperson in relation to the latest developments in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Spehar, the Deputy Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on Cyprus, is meeting on Thursday morning with the President of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, for the first time since his re-election and according to Alleem Siddique, the UN Spokesman in Cyprus she will be there to listen.

State Department: US recognizes right of the Republic of Cyprus to develop EEZ resources

The United States recognizes the right of the Republic of Cyprus to develop its resources in its Exclusive Economic Zone, said a State Department Spokesperson, adding that the US policy on Cyprus’s EEZ is longstanding and has not changed.

“Turkish obstruction in Cypriot waters violates EU territorial integrity”, stated today the European United Left (GUE/NGL) parliamentary group in the European Parliament call upon the UN and the EU to take decisive action against Ankara. In another development, the European Peoples Party President Joseph Daul called upon Turkey to stop provoking and threatening Cyprus.

New Cabinet announced, is of broader social acceptance, President says

The new Council of Ministers will be of a broader social acceptance, President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades has said. The new Cabinet was announced today by Deputy Government Spokesman Viktoras Papadopoulos. The swear in ceremony will take place on the 1st of March.

Cooperative bank to issue covered bond

The Cyprus Cooperative Bank announced it will issue a covered bond to be introduced in the Dublin Stock Exchange in a bid to diversify its funding base, the CCB CEO Nicolas Hadjiyiannis said on Tuesday. The state-owned CCB said the new covered bond programme will be launched next December in cooperation with Barclays Capital. Meanwhile, it was annouunced that the Residential Property Price Index recorded an increase of 0.4% for the fifth consecutive quarter in the third quarter of 2017, on a quarterly basis, while the Index increased by 1.4%

Terrorism is a problem which also concerns Cypriots, not just because of their travels in other European countries, Cypriot MEP Demetris Papadakis has told CNA, noting that just like other EU countries Cyprus is also in the eye of the storm. In an interview with Cyprus News Agency, Papadakis speaks of the challenges ahead for both Cyprus and the EU and his own efforts within the European Parliament.

Cyprus President sends condolences to Putin over airplane crash

President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades sent a message of condolences to Russian President Vladimir Putin over the February 11th airplane crash that cost the lives of 71 people.

According to an announcement by the Presidency, in his message to Putin, President Anastasiades said that he received with sorrow the tragic news of the plane crash in the outskirts of Moscow.

U.S. Ambassador repeats call for information on the missing persons

U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus Kathleen Doherty has called for anyone who has information about the fate of the missing to come forward before it is lost.

A press release from the US Embassy in Nicosia said Doherty visited the Committee of Missing Persons on Monday where she met with the three committee members and visited the laboratory. The Ambassador expressed her appreciation for all the work done by the scientists and investigators.

Cyprus looks forward to a new record-breaking tourist season

The Cypriot government and the Cyprus hoteliers said they expect that 2018 will mark another record-breaking year in terms of tourist arrivals on the back of two consecutive records in 2016 and 2017. Addressing the Cyprus Hoteliers association (PASIXE), Minister for Tourism, Yiorgos Lakkotrypis said that 2017 marked a new record of 3.6 million tourist arrivals with revenue from tourism in the first eleven months of last year amounting to 2.6 billion marking an increase of Euros 220 million compared with the whole of 2016.
