Cyprus’ sovereignty and territorial integrity could be guaranteed by the UNSC, Lavrov says

The most effective safeguarding of the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Cyprus could come from the UN Security Council itself, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday. Speaking after talks in Moscow with his Cypriot counterpart, Nikos Christodoulides, Lavrov said the system of guarantees (in Cyprus) is anachronistic and is inconsistent with the modern world. He also described Cyprus as an important partner of Russia in Eastern Mediterranean and Europe.

FM pays a working visit to Riyadh

Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides travels to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday, for a working visit at the invitation of his counterpart Adel Al Jubeir. A press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the two ministers will discuss bilateral relations, the Cyprus problem, the relations between EU and Saudi Arabia and regional issues.

House Foreign Affairs Committee invites Greek Foreign Minister to discuss national issues

The President of the House Committee on Foreign and European Affairs and Citizens’ Alliance President, Yiorgos Lillikas, briefed on Friday the Greek Ambassador to Cyprus, Ilias Fotopoulos, on the invitation extended to Greek Foreign Minister, Nikos Kotzias, to attend a Committee session and brief its members on Greece’s policy regarding national issues.

Delivery of humanitarian aid to the enclaved to begin next week, Photiou tells CNA

Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou has told CNA that the dispatch of humanitarian aid to the enclaved living in Cyprus northern Turkish occupied areas will begin next week. Responding to a question, following a recent decision by the “council of ministers” in the occupied areas to revoke an earlier decision which imposed “duties” on humanitarian aid delivered from the southern government-controlled areas of the Republic to Greek Cypriots and Maronites in the northern occupied part of the island, Photiou said that “we have been informed by UNFICYP (the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus) that the occupation regime will allow the delivery of humanitarian aid to the enclaved in Karpasia and the Maronite villages.”

Cyprus general government Q1 fiscal surplus jumps by 68% to Euros 340 million

Cyprus general government fiscal surplus jumped by 68% amounting to Euros 340.5 million or 1.7% of GDP in the first quarter of 2018, due to increased revenue given the continuing economic expansion. According to data released by the Finance Ministry, the general government’s primary surplus (excluding debt servicing expenditure) amounted to Euros 428.5 million or 2.1% of GDP, marking an increase of 45% compared with the respective period of 2017.
