UNSG to send senior UN official for in-depth consultations with parties of Cyprus issue

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has said that in the coming period, he intends to send a senior United Nations official to conduct in-depth consultations with the parties in the framework of the efforts to solve the Cyprus issue. According to the advance copy of the Report of the Secretary-General on progress towards a settlement in Cyprus for the information of the members of the Security Council, the UNSG says that I believe there is still scope for the sides to act responsibly and decisively in order to chart a common way forward for the island. The interest exhibited by the UN Secretary to continue the negotiations for a Cyprus settlement was underlined on Saturday by Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou.

Government approves in principle deal on CCB following Hellenic Bank’s offer

The government of Cyprus has approved in principle a deal on the Cyprus Co-operative Bank, following the offer submitted by the Hellenic Bank to buy out the bank.

In statements after the Council of Ministers meeting on Friday, Minister of Finance Haris Georgiades said that the Hellenic Banks offer to acquire part of the portfolio of the Cooperative Bank was in principle acceptable, but subject to the submission of the plan regarding the shareholding structure.

Limitation of Cyprus EEZ does not serve Turkish Cypriots interests, Lakkotrypis tells Economist conference

President Anastasiades congratulates PM Tsipras on agreement with FYROM leadership

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades has congratulated Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on reaching an agreement with the leadership of FYROM. A written statement by Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou says that the President of the Republic “held today a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of Greece during which he was informed about what has been agreed with the leadership of FYROM”.

French Ambassador reiterates Paris’ position in favor of a Cyprus settlement

The Ambassador of France in Cyprus Rene Troccaz underlined on Friday Paris’ long-standing position for a Cyprus settlement, on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation.

He was speaking after a meeting with Averof Neofytou, the President of the Democratic Rally, at the partys headquarters. Besides the Cyprus issue, the two men also discussed energy issues and bilateral relations, as well as Neofytou’s forthcoming visit to Paris, between June 19-21.

Cyprus records 1% inflation in May on annual basis

Infation of 1% was recorded on an annual basis in May in Cyprus, while on a monthly basis it was recorded at 1.4%.

The Harmonised Consumer Price Index was up by 1.0% in May 2018 compared to May 2017, while in relation to the previous month it was up by 1.4%, a press release published on Cyprus Statistical Services website says.

Cyprus Rally gets underway

The 2018 Cyprus Rally got underway on Friday with 47 crews getting off the starting rump in the ceremonial start in the picturesque promenade of Larnaca. Slottting in as round four of the European Rally Championship (ERC) and round two of the FIA Middle Rally Championship (MERC), this year’s Cyprus Rally is expected to be even more spectacular, as the ERC leaders will push their claim for the title which remains up for grabs, a Cyprus Rally press release said.
