Two new crossing points open in Cyprus

Two new crossing points opened in Cyprus on Monday, divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied the island’s northern third.

The checkpoints of Dherynia, just a few kilometres from occupied Famagusta and Apliki-Lefka opened to hundreds of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots who immediately started the trek along the divide.

National Council convenes under the President of Cyprus

The National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the Cyprus issue, convenes this morning in Nicosia, under the President of the Repubic Nicos Anastasiades. The President is expected to brief members about his October 26 meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, as well as his October 31 meeting with Jane Holl Lute, the UN Secretary-General’s envoy.

Cyprus President has brief contacts with world leaders in Paris

President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades had a series of brief contacts with world leaders in Paris, at the margins of events commemorating the centenary of the First World War. Among others, he met briefly with Turkish President Erdogan, but as CNA learns, the two men did not discuss the Cyprus issue.

Moody’s: CBC directive on shell companies improves anti-money-laundering practices

Moody’s rating agency says that Cyprus Central Bank’s (CBC) new directive on shell companies is credit positive for Cypriot banks, because the specific definitions of shell companies will help eliminate suspicious transactions and further strengthen banks’ anti-money-laundering (AML) practices.
