Greek PM and German Chancellor discuss the Cyprus problem

The Cyprus problem was among the issues which the Prime Minister of Greece, Alexis Tsipras, and the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, discussed on Thursday in Athens.

In joint statements after their talks, Tsipras and Merkel emphasized the opening of a new chapter in Greek-German relations, focusing on the upgrading of the two countries bilateral cooperation and the development of policies for Europe’s sustainability.

Spehar holds meetings with leaders before departing for New York

UN Secretary Generals Special Representative in Cyprus and head of UNFICYP Elizabeth Spehar is set to hold meetings on Friday with Cyprus President NicosAnastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, ahead of her visit to New York where she will brief the UN Security Council on January 23. The UN Secretary-Generals report on the UN peace-keeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) is expected to be handed over to the UN Security Council members on Thursday or Friday the latest. A resolution on the renewal of UNFICYP mandate, the UN peace keeping force in Cyprus, will be tabled before the body for approval on January 30.

Cyprus question a European problem that must be upgraded, Weber says

The Cyprus question is a European issue and it must be upgraded, the EPP’s candidate for the position of European Commission President and leader of the EPP Group in the European Parliament Manfred Weber said today. He was speaking after being received by Cyprus President NicosAnastasiades,at the Presidential Palace. The President said he looks forward to working closely with the EPPs lead candidate. Weber is paying Cyprus a visit, the first official one of his campaign in 2019. Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Weber sent a message of solidarity to Cyprus, noting that we need a Republic of Cyprus which is independent, with no guarantee powers and foreign troops.

Cyprus tops the EU leader board concerning absorption of EURDF funds

Cyprus for a second year ranked first among the EU member state regarding the absorption of EU Regional Development Fund in 2018 and sixth concerning its absorption capacity from all EU funds.

According to EU data, Cyprus achieved an absorption rate of 46%, followed by Finland with 36% and Luxemburg with 35%.

Motor vehicle sales rise for fifth consecutive year

Motor vehicles sales in Cyprus rose by 13.3% in 2018 marking the fifth consecutive annual increase since 2014. According to data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat), total new registration of motor vehicles reached 49,450 in 2018 compared to 43,640 the year before, reaching the highest point in the last ten years.
