National Council meeting underway

A National Council meeting is underway at the Presidential Palace, in Nicosia, during which Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades will brief political party leaders on the discussion he had with the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mustafa Akinci, during their informal meeting on Tuesday, as regards efforts for the resumption of Cyprus talks and Confidence Building Measures.

ExxonMobil announces a discovery of 5 to 8 trillion cubic feet in Cyprus’ EEZ

ExxonMobil will spend the next months analysing the results of Glaucus 1 well to better determine the potential after a discovery of a natural gas resource of approximately 5 to 8 trillion cubic feet in Cyprus’ offshore block 10.

Minister of Energy, Yorgos Lakkotrypis announced in a press conference together with Tristan Aspray, ExxonMobil Vice President of Exploration for Europe that the resource was the largest discovery so far discovered in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and according to official data one of the greatest discoveries in the world in recent years.

Meanwhile, it was announced that executives from leading oil and gas companies including Eni, ExxonMobil, Hellenic Petroleum, Noble Energy and Total are gathering in Cyprus on March 6-7, to discuss the industry’s future direction in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Cyprus and Russia sign protocol to develop cooperation

A protocol to further strengthen relations between Cyprus and Russia as well as to develop cooperation in a number of fields including economy, commerce, research and innovation, tourism, energy and maritime, was signed on Thursday in Moscow.

UK Government assures MP T. Villiers of commitment to Cyprus settlement

Chipping Barnet MP Theresa Villiers has received a commitment from the Government that it will continue to work towards a united Cyprus.

Speaking in a House of Commons debate yesterday, Theresa urged the Government to use its soft power and diplomatic network to enthusiastically support the efforts of Cypriots to deliver a negotiated settlement for a free and united Cyprus.

General Government’s surplus reaches Euros 257,5 mn in January

The preliminary General Government fiscal results for January 2019, which are prepared by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (CYSTAT), indicate a surplus of Euros 257,5 mn (1,2% of GDP), as compared to a surplus of Euros 255,2 mn in the corresponding month of 2018 (also 1,2% of GDP).

In another development, the preliminary General Government fiscal results indicate a deficit of Euros 1.050,9 mn (-5,1% of GDP) for 2018, as compared to a surplus of Euros 344,2 mn for 2017 (1,8% of GDP).

Industrial Output Prices Index for January decreased

The Industrial Output Prices Index for January 2019 reached 102,5 units (base 2015=100), recording a decrease of 1,3% compared to December 2018, according to figures published today by Statistical Service.

?he index showed an increase of 4,6% compared to January 2018.

Meanwhile, the Turnover Value Index recorded an important increase of 26,4% in information and communication activities during the fourth quarter of 2018 compared to the corresponding quarter of 2017.

Cyprus ranks high in absorption rates from programmes funded by the European Structural and investment Funds

Cyprus is amongst the first countries of the EU as far as absorption rates from the programmes funded by the European Structural and investment funds, said Deputy Government Spokeswoman Klelia Vasiliou, speaking after the cabinet meeting.

She said that the cabinet was briefed on the programmes for the period 2014-2920.

Cyprus announces decision to bid for European Labour Authority

The government of Cyprus announced, on Thursday, its decision to submit an application to host the European Labour Authority (ELA).

The decision to bid for the new European body which is expected to be established within 2019, was announced after a meeting of the Cabinet, by Deputy Government Spokesperson Klelia Vasiliou.

France wishes to further develop political relations with Cyprus, French Ambassador says

Frances Ambassador in Nicosia Rene Troccaz has expressed his countrys will to further develop political relations between Cyprus and France, particularly in the sensitive region of the Eastern Mediterranean, in which Cyprus is the only EU member state, but also its wish to continue to invest in various sectors of the islands economy.
