UN envoy in Cyprus probably after December 20, government source tells CNA

There are no details yet as to the date of arrival of Jane Holl Lute, the envoy of the UN Secretary General, who is expected in Cyprus in order to agree on the terms of reference that will pave the way for the resumption of settlement talks. A government source told CNA that this is not likely to happen before December 20. The only thing which is certain is that we expect Ms. Lute to notify us about her arrival, the same source said. A UN source in Cyprus also said that there are no details about her schedule.

Cyprus urges Council of Europe to resist Turkish blackmail

The Republic of Cyprus urges the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe to resist what blatantly amounts to blackmail on behalf of Turkey in relation to the review of a case concerning Greek Cypriot property in the Turkish-occupied part of the island. Titina Loizidou, a Greek Cypriot applicant seeks to enforce a 1996 Court judgment for the restitution and peaceful enjoyment of her property in Turkish-occupied Kyrenia, in the northern coast of Cyprus.

Transport Ministry optimistic that bus strike can be averted

The Ministry of Transport was optimistic on Sunday that strike action can be averted and public transport companies will continue operating normally in the various districts of Cyprus. Stavros Michael, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary told CNA that he will sign off payments to the four companies in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca and Famagusta first thing on Monday. In return, this will allow companies to pay their employees, he added.

Defence Minister in Cairo for trilateral meeting and defence expo

Cypriot Defence Minister Savvas Angelides travels to Cairo on Sunday where where he will attend the opening of defence exposition “EDEX-2018” and will take part in a trilateral ministerial meeting between Cyprus, Greece and Egypt. Angelides is visiting the Egyptian capital following an invitation by Egyptian Defence Minister, General Mohamed Zaki to attend the “EDEX- 2018” expo which will be opened by Egypts President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, a Defence Ministry press release issued here today says. It adds that the trilateral meeting will review cooperation between the three countries so far and seek ways to further enhance it.

Tsipras to discuss Cyprus issue, energy and EU-Russia relations in Moscow

The Cyprus issue, bilateral relations, energy and EU-Russia relations will be on the agenda of talks between Alexis Tsipras and Vladimir Putin, during the Greek Premier’s official visit to Moscow on December 7. Tsipras will be accompanied by Greek Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Georgios Katrougalos and while in the Russian capital, he is scheduled to meet with President Putin and Prime Minister Medvedev.
