President says he works for peace and stability in Cyprus

President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades said on Saturday that he works to create the circumstances which will allow for conditions of peace and stability in Cyprus. “I would like to assure you that my utmost concern is to see the dream that we all share, being realized. To see how those conditions are created that will allow for peace and stability in this troubled country” he said. Meanwhile, on Friday he said that the UN Secretary General’s report leaves room for hope.

House President on official visit to Egypt

President of the House of Representatives Demetris Syllouris is in Egypt for an official visit to Egypt, upon the invitation of his Egyptian counterpart, Dr Ali Abdel-Aal. A press release by the Parliament says that Syllouris, accompanied by a Cyprus Parliament delegation, and President of CIPA Michalis Michael, will be received by Egptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi and Prime Minister Dr Mostafa Madbouly.

Laurent Fabius received by Cyprus President

Upgraded relations between Cyprus and France and developments regarding the Cyprus issue were discussed on Friday, during a meeting between the President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and the former Prime Minister of France and President of the Constitutional Council Laurent Fabius. The French official was also declared Honorary Doctor of the European University Cyprus. During his speech there, he called for action on climate change.

House plenary resolution denounces US recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over Golan Heights

The plenary of the House of Representatives approved on Friday a resolution denouncing the US unlawful recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over the Occupied Golan Heights. According to the draft resolution, the House reaffirms its full respect for the sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic over the occupied Golan Heights and calls on the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, a victim of foreign occupation itself, to act against this violation.

Cyprus records fiscal deficit 4.8% and public debt 102.5% of GDP in 2018

?he preliminary fiscal results for 2018 indicate a fiscal deficit of Euros 989,6 mn, which corresponds to 4.8% of GDP, and a fiscal debt of Euros 21.258,1 mn, which corresponds to 102.5% of GDP, according to an announcement issued by the Statistical Service. These results include one-off expenditure valued at Euros 1.725,1 mn that concern the Cyprus Central Bank � Hellenic Bank deal.

US official praises Cyprus’ enormous progress on anti-money laundering

US Department of Treasury Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing Marshall Billingslea praised Cyprus’ enormous progress in issues relating to anti-money laundering (AML). Marshall Billingslea met with Finance Minister Harris Georgiades, a visit described as part of the US’ scrutiny over the island’s financial sector. Georgiades pointed out the two countries and the EU are promoting a common agenda on issues of AML and Counter Terrorism Financing.
