UK Government reiterates support for a bizonal bicommunal federation settlement

The UK continues to believe that a bizonal bicommunal federation would better secure a just and viable settlement to the Cyprus issue, a Government spokesperson said in London, a day after Prime Minister May received President Erdogan at Downing Street. In a joint press conference following their meeting on Tuesday neither Mrs May nor Mr Erdogan included Cyprus in the list of issues they had discussed.

Foreign Minister to participate in CoE Committee of Ministers session

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, will participate in the 128th Session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, which will be held in Elsinore, Denmark, on the 17th and 18th of May 2018.According to a press release by the Ministry, the main topic of discussion among the Ministers will be the role of the Council of Europe in countering current challenges.

Greek Cypriot property owners turn to Strasbourg over IPC ineffectiveness

Cyprus registers in April the lowest annual inflation in the EU

Cyprus registered the lowest annual inflation in the European Union for April 2018, with -0.3%, according to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In March the inflation was -0,4% and a year earlier in April 2017 +2.1%. Ireland (-0.1%) and Portugal (0.3%) follow, while the highest rates were recorded in Romania (4.3%), Slovakia (3.0%) and Estonia (2.9%). This was deflation for the fifth consecutive month.

In 2017, 255 asylum applications from unaccompanied minors were filed in Cyprus

In 2017, 225 unaccompanied minors applied for asylum in Cyprus (215 in 2016) or 32.4% of all asylum applications received. A 4% of them were 14 years old or less and 64% of the total were males. According to Eurostat, issuing these figures today, 105 came from Syria, or 46%, 85 from Somalia, or 38% and 15 from the Democratic Republic of the Congo or 6%.

Pafos mosque can be used with safety during Ramadan, Ministry says

The Department of Public Works has managed to get the contractor responsible for the project of restoring the mosque in Pafos to complete construction work so that it can be used with safety during Ramadan, a Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works press release says.The project was part of the general project of the unification of archaeological sites in Kato Pafos and it included the restoration of both the inside and outside area of the site of worship of Pafos Muslims, the press release explains.

AEK FC wins 2017-2018 Cypriot Cup

AEK Larnaca FC became the Cyprus Cup champion on Wednesday after beating Apollon of Limassol with 2-1 at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia. It is AEKs second Cyprus Cup victory. The last time was in 2004. Apollon was trying to win the Cup for the third straight time.
