Cyprus President to contact Lute ahead of the UN envoy’s return to the island

The President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades said on Monday that he will speak with Jane Holl Lute, either today or tomorrow, ahead of the anticipated return of the UN envoy to the island, in an effort to reach an agreement on the terms of reference that will pave the way for the resumption of Cyprus talks. Asked about the appointment of Andreas Mavroyiannis as the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus to the UN and whether this impacts on the preparations of the Greek Cypriot side for the resumption of Cyprus talks, he replied not at all. Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou also noted on Sunday that we are expecting developments soon.

Greek FM to meet UN Envoy for Cyprus on Friday

Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Giorgos Katrougalos is scheduled to meet UN envoy Jane Holl Lute on Friday in the US capital. He told reporters when asked in New York at the end of his contacts there, that it was up to Lute to visit the region. We remain firm in the need to have a resolution to the Cyprus problem that will be based on UN decisions and international law, said Katrougalos.

Spokesman pays tribute to EOKA Liberation struggle

Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou paid tribute to today’s 1st April which marks the date when the EOKA rebellion for the island to gain independence against the British Colony began. He told a gathering in Limassol that we are fighting with political means now to rid of the Turkish troops. The armed anti-colonial struggle lasted for four years and lead to the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus in 1960, having three guarantor powers, Britain Greece and Turkey.

Unemployment in Cyprus drops to 7.1%

The unemployment rate in Cyprus was 7.1% (7.0% in males and 7.2% in females) in February 2019 (32 000 individuals), down from 7.3% in January 2019 and 9.4% in February 2018. At the same time, seasonally-adjusted unemployment in the euro area was 7.8%, while the unemployment rate in the EU28 was 6.5% in February 2019, according to Eurostat
