CMP exhumes remains of two presumed missing persons in old Nicosia

? bi-communal excavation team of the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) exhumed on Thursday the remains of two presumed missing persons close to Tekke Bahcesi in the Turkish-occupied part of the old town of Nicosia.

According to a CMP announcement, exhumations started a week ago and are ongoing.

This is considered an area of particular interest for CMP, as CNA learns.

In 2019, the CMP has recovered the remains of 26 individuals, the announcement adds.

CMP extends once again its plea to all communities on the island to support the Committee’s efforts by providing information on possible burial sites.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third. Since then, the fate of hundreds of people remains unknown.

A Committee on Missing Persons has been established, upon agreement between the leaders of the two communities, with the scope of exhuming, identifying and returning the remains of missing persons to their relatives.
