Charalambides briefs OSCE PA on attack against peacekeepers in buffer zone

Vice-President of the OSCE PA, Special Representative on Fighting Corruption, MP Irene Charalambides, has briefed her colleagues at the Assembly about the events that took place on Friday in the buffer zone with the attacks against members of he UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). Charalambides said in a statement that she briefed her colleagues about the situation in Cyprus and the unacceptable assault of the occupation regime in Pyla against members of UNFICYP who tried to prevent unauthorized works to construct a road within the buffer zone. Moreover, she noted that she recalled that the international community and the UNSC permanent members except Russia, that asked for a postponement until Monday, have unequivocally condemned the attacks. “I underlined that the fact that there is a delay for the issue to be examined by the UNSC is not beneficial for the de-escalation and the return to legality,” Charalambides said. Members of the UNFICYP were attacked on Friday morning while blocking unauthorised construction works by the Turkish Cypriot puppet regime inside the buffer zone near Pyla. The government of Cyprus, the UN, the EU, and various countries have condemned the incident. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
