Candidacies for 2018 presidential elections to be submitted on Friday

Candidacies for the 2018 presidential elections are submitted on Friday, from 0900-1200 local time, at the Philoxenia Conference Centrre in Nicosia.

According to the programme for the submission of the candidacies that has been released, a total of nine candidacies will be submitted.

The first candidate to submit his candidacy will be Haris Aristidou at 0900, followed by Christakis Kapiliotis at 0930 and Andreas Efstratiou at 0945.

At 1000 Michalis Mina will submit his bid, followed at 1015 by ELAM President Christos Christou.

Stavros Malas, who is running as an independent candidate, and is supported by the main opposition AKEL party will submit his candidacy at 1030 followed by Democratic Party leader Nicholas Papadopoulos at 1100. George Lilikas, who is backed by his party Citizens’ Alliance will submit his bid at 1115.

Incumbent President Nicos Anastasiades, who is seeking re-election will be the last to submit his candidacy at 1145 am.

Each candidate has to pay the amount of 2 thousand euros as a fee, while for each candidacy documents have to be signed by 101 voters. One of them proposes the candidacy and the other 100 support it.

The election of the new President of the Republic for the next term in office, covering the period from 2018 to 2023, will take place on January 28, 2018. A run off election is set to be held on February 4, 2018, if necessary.
