Cabinet decides on new measures to contain COVID-19

President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades chairs on Wednesday evening a Cabinet meeting, expected to take decisions on additional measures to contain the spread of COVID-19. As infections increase, the Council of Ministers is likely to decide to impose local lockdowns in Limassol and Paphos.

President Anastasiades is expected to announce the decisions himself, after the session.

The possibility of a Cyprus-wide lockdown seems remote, but cannot be excluded, taking into account the prevailing situation which exerts pressure on the health system. The aim is to reduce the number of cases, ahead of the Christmas season, in order to allow the market to function properly. Another possibility is the Cabinet to decide to toughen up existing measures.

Measures were discussed during an inter-ministerial committee, presided by Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades, on Tuesday. During the meeting President Anastasiades and the Ministers discussed and evaluated the epidemiological picture of Cyprus, the scientific views and recommendations of the epidemiological advisory team, the parameters and effects of the pandemic, as well as additional measures that have to be taken, both locally and nationwide, to prevent further spread of the coronavirus.

The inter-ministerial committee submitted its suggestions to the Council of Ministers, which is expected to take the relevant decisions this evening.
