BRITISH PRIME MINISTER MAY VISITS BRITISH FORCES IN CYPRUS

Prime Minister Theresa May arrived in Cyprus on Friday to visit British forces on the island, which hosts a military base used as a staging post for attacks against Islamic State targets.

Britain has about 3,100 military personnel stationed at two bases in Cyprus. It retained sovereignty over about 98 square miles of Cyprus, or 3 percent of the island’s territory, after granting independence to the former colony in 1960.

RAF Akrotiri hosts an RAF Expeditionary Airforce Wing which supports operation SHADER, Britain’s code-name for attacks on Islamic State targets in Iraq.
