Beijing firmly supports peaceful efforts for Cyprus solution, Chinese Ambassador tells CNA

China firmly supports the peaceful efforts to reach a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue, the countrys Ambassador in Nicosia, Huang Xingyuan told the Cyprus News Agency today.

Replying to CNA questions, the Chinese Ambassador said that China is pleased to hear that the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus held a meeting on Sunday in New York with the UN Secretary General and agreed to continue their efforts, expressing willingness to hold a meeting in Geneva.

The Chinese government always provides a solid support to Cyprus, to the peaceful efforts that the two leaders make to achieve a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus issue on the basis of the UN resolutions the Ambassador told CNA.

Speaking through an intepreter, he said that the Cyprus negotiations are now in their final stage and noted that the last mile is the most difficult and political wisdom is needed.

He also said that the Chinese government will not only support the peaceful negotiations for a comprehensive settlement but will also support the efforts after the solution, emphasizing efforts to rebuild the country.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci have been engaged in UN-led talks since May 2015 with a view to reunite the island under a federal roof.
