The talks on the Cyprus problem commenced today, January 9, 2017 at the UN headquarters in Geneva between the President of the Republic and leader of the Greek Cypriot community, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, Mr Mustafa Akinci, in the presence of their interlocutors and the members of their corresponding delegations.
On today’s first day of the three-day-talks on the Cyprus problem between the two communities, the President of the Republic arrived at the Palace of the Nations at 8:50 in the morning, followed by Mr Akinci a few minutes later. The two leaders were welcomed by the Special Advisor of the UN Secretary General on the Cyprus, Mr Espen Barth Eide, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Cyprus, Ms Elizabeth Spehar, and the Director-General of the UN Office at Geneva, Mr Michael Moller.
President Anastasiades and Mr. Akinci then participated in talks in the presence of their interlocutors and members of their negotiating teams.
The talks, which are scheduled to last from today until 11 January, will be conducted from 9am to 1pm, and from 6pm to 8:30pm (Swiss time), daily.
