Authorities decide to take steps to control or eradicate dangerous mosquito species

Authorities in Cyprus decided to take measures with a view to control or eradicate two species of mosquitos spotted in Limassol and Larnaca which can be dangerous for the people, namely the Aedes albopictus and the Aedes aegypti.

The decisions were taken by the Health Ministry, the local authorities and the Technical University of Cyprus. The Health Ministry’s Public Health Authorities briefed representatives of the local authorities of Limassol and Larnaca as well as representatives of the Ministries of Agriculture and Defence.

There is no reason of concern for the time being, since the contagious diseases that these species may transmit have not been found in Cyprus.

In statements after the meeting, Health Minister, Michalis Hadjipantela said that they decided to take measures as to send material to municipalities and communities, with a view to raise awareness among people.

Moreover they will proceed with registering abandoned car tyres and inform the municipalities and the communities of Limassol and Larnaca and they will be taken by the Agriculture Ministry.

The Health Ministry will also purchase biocidical products that will be given to the communities, while National Guard trained staff will be used for spraying the affected areas.
