Arrest warrant issued against a father who has abducted his 4year old daughter

Cyprus Police have secured an arrest warrant for a Norwegian national, 49, father of a 4-year-old girl kidnapped early on Thursday morning in front of her Cypriot mother, outside a kindergarten in Nicosia, Police spokesman Andreas Angelides has said.

In statements to the press, Angelides said the 4 year-old girl was abducted at 08:40 (005.00 GMT) local time by two hooded men, using force, as her mother was about to enter enter the kindergarten. The girl was forced to enter a black SUV, which sped away from the scene of the abduction.

The Police have secured an arrest warrant against the 49 year-old father of the 4 year-old, in connection with the kidnapping and assault. We are proceeding with investigations and search to locate the said person, he said.

He added the Police will take all necessary action to secure an international or a European arrest warrant, depending on the information received by the force.

Angelides said the Police under the direction of its Chief Andreas Chrysostomou has recalled leave of police officers to help with the search on a island-wide scale on land, air and sea, while a crisis management centre has been set up in the headquarters of Emergency Response Unit.

Describing the case as an extremely humanitarian issue, Angelides added that time is of the essence.

The Police have published a photo of the 4 year old girl and has already been receiving information from civilians both directly and from the social media.

According to Angelides, police investigators began assessing the information received.

Replying to question, Angelides said the police are evaluating information that a girl wearing a gray track suit has been seen in a different car in the area of a crossing point to the northern Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus, over which the legal government of the Republic of Cyprus is prevented from exercising its jurisdiction because of the continuing Turkish occupation.

He added the Police have also found and are examining some items in the vicinity of the kindergarten, believed to belong to the 4 year-old girl.

Asked about a statement attributed to the girls father published in Norwegian media saying that he has been reunited with his daughter, Angelides said the police have received information which is being evaluated.

Nothing has been confirmed so far. Therefore investigations are continuing, he concluded.
