Air Force pilot grief-stricken after girl dies in crash

The pilot of a jet from the Italian Air Force’s Frecce Tricolori display team that crashed in the area of Turin’s Caselle airport on Saturday, killing a five-year-old girl, has told his colleagues that he is grief-stricken.

The jet crashed at the bottom of a runway and the resulting blast involved a passing car carrying a family, according to initial reports.

The 12-year-old brother of the girl, named Laura, is in intensive care with burns and her parents were injured too.

“I’m profoundly pained,” Mayor Oscar Del Do’ told his colleagues, sources said on Sunday.

“All I think about is little Laura”.

The pilot survived after ejecting from the jet but also suffered burns.

He is likely to be put under criminal investigation by prosecutors.

This, however, is a formality necessary for investigators to run a conduct a series of procedures to find out what happened and does not imply that they think he is to blame, the sources said.
