Minister of Agriculture Nicos Kouyialis said on Friday Cyprus was ready to contribute to Commonwealth efforts to promote blue sustainable development, while cooperating with other international organizations, such as the UN and the EU.
According to an announcement distributed by PIO, Kouyialis met yesterday with Patricia Scotland, the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, in London, and discussed the priorities of island states ahead of the Ocean Conference, to be organized by the UN in New York next week.
The Minister also said that Cyprus was ready to provide expertise or training to other island states of the Commonwealth in certain areas where it possesses adequate know-how.
Following an invitation by Scotland, the Minister will be among key speakers to address a high level meeting, organized by the Commonwealth in the margins of the Ocean Conference, on June 6.
While in London, Kouyialis also announced the government’s intention to become partner of the Queens Commonwealth Canopy, a forest protection initiative in the framework of the Royal Commonwealth Society. During a ceremony in Buckingham Palace, Kouyialis pledged Cyprus’ support to international efforts to protect the environment, the announcement concludes.
