Address by the President of the Republic at the dinner hosted in his honor by the Business Associations of Cyprus and India, yesterday

I have said it numerous times since I arrived in India, but it is the honest truth, and I will repeat it here tonight: I feel greatly honoured and touched to be in India, this great nation of tradition home to ancient civilisations that is making strides into the future through innovative advancement.

It is a great pleasure to be at tonight’s reception, and I wish to warmly thank all of you for your presence here, and for your keen interest in Cyprus. Allow me also to extend my warms thanks to the organisers of this event, the All India Association of Industries, the World Trade Centre Mumbai, the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as well as the High Commission of Cyprus in India and our Honorary Consul General in Maharashtra Mr Rana Kapoor.

Cyprus and India share a deep historical bond, a long-standing friendship that is anchored on common values such as respect for democracy, rule of law, and a deep understanding and respect of each other’s history.

I would like to make particular reference to India’s principled stance on the Cyprus problem; India has stood unequivocally by Cyprus in our efforts to reunify our country and its people and preserve the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus. And for that we are truly grateful.

Tomorrow I will have the opportunity to discuss with President Mukherjee and Prime Minister Modi all areas pertaining to our relations, including our economic relations. I am particularly pleased that agreements in the field of merchant shipping, aviation, agriculture, culture and education will be signed tomorrow, paving the path for enhancing cooperation in these fields.

The business forums in Mumbai and New Delhi shed light on the unique investment opportunities that Cyprus has to offer, and I truly hope that further to the interaction of our business communities here in India will create new windows of opportunity that will deepen Cyprus-India economic ties.

Let me reiterate that the Government of the Republic of Cyprus is truly committed to remaining a reliable partner in facilitating business and investment initiatives involving India, and will stand by all of you, the business community in your efforts to deepen our economic ties.

Thank you all for your presence, and to the organisers for tonight’s event.
