Accreditation of the new Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Portugal

The new Ambassador of the Republic to Portugal, Mr Andreas Ignatiou, presented yesterday his letters of credence to the President of the Portuguese Republic, Professor Marcelo Rebelo de Souza.

During the accreditation ceremony Ambassador Ignatiou conveyed President Anastasiades’ greetings and wishes for progress and well-being to the Government and the people of Portugal.

During a meeting with President Rebelo de Souza, the Ambassador briefed his interlocutor on the state of play of the current negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus Problem and expressed Cyprus’ satisfaction with the stance of the Government of Portugal and the constructive role of the UN Secretary-General, Mr Antonio Guterres. He assured the Portuguese President of his intention to work for further developing bilateral relations.

The President of the Portuguese Republic reiterated his country’s interest in and support to the efforts for resolving the Cyprus Problem, the solution of which should be compatible with the EU principles and law. He also expressed his willingness to promote and enhance the cooperation of the two countries and he extended an invitation to President Anastasiades to visit Portugal.
