A meeting of the UN Secretary General with the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, in the coming days, is not on the cards, a source close to the Greek Cypriot negotiating team has told CNA.
Questioned on a possible meeting between Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades with the UN SG, during the Presidents stay in New York next week, the same source said nothing of the kind has been arranged so far.
According to a Turkish Cypriot newspaper, Kibris postasi, there is a claim that the two leaders, who have not met since February 16th , at the invitation of the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres will go to New York next week where they will meet together to overcome the present stalemate in the negotiation process.
Kibris postasi, quoting senior diplomatic sources says that President Anastasiades, who will be in New York on March 22 to speak at the “Invest in Cyprus Forum” conference of Capital Link, has requested a meeting with the SG. However, the UN Secretary General, instead of meeting only with Anastasiades at this difficult time for the Cyprus problem, he will invite to New York the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mustafa Akinci as well to meet them both in a bid to overcome the existing stalemate.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN led talks between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities resumed in May 2015 with a view to reunite the island under a federal roof.
The talks were interrupted in mid February by the Turkish Cypriot side, which demands that a decision passed by the Cypriot Parliament relating to a 1950 referendum on union with Greece is revoked, claiming this indicates a shift in the Greek Cypriot sides goal for a federal solution. The amendment provides that there will be a very brief reference to the referendum at schools.
President Anastasiades has described the House decision as wrong and called on the leader of the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mustafa Akinci, who walked out of the talks, to return to the negotiating table to discuss pending issues with a view to reach a mutually acceptable agreement to reunite the country.
