5th Southern EU Countries Summit gets underway in Nicosia

The 5th Southern EU Countries Summit kicked off on Tuesday afternoon in Nicosia to discuss the major challenges which the EU currently faces as the migration issue, Brexit, energy security, the 2021-2027 Multiannual Financial Framework, developments in the Eurozone and the climate change.

Regional issues will also be discussed, among which the Cyprus problem about which the President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades will inform the other participants from France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal and Malta. A Joint Declaration will be issued after the Summit.

President Anastasiades welcomed earlier at the Filoxenia Conference Centre where the Summit is taking place the Foreign Minister of Spain Josep Borrell Fontelles, the Prime Minister of Malta Joseph Muscat, the Prime Minister of Portugal Antonio Costa, the Prime Minister of Greece Alexis Tsipras, the Prime Minister of Italy Giuseppe Conte and the President of France Emmanuel Macron.

Consultations will be followed by a family photo opportunity.

After that a bilateral meeting will take place between President Anastasiades and the Prime Minister of Italy.

Afterwards the seven leaders will make statements to the media in the following order: President Anastasiades, President Macron, Prime Minister Conte, Prime Minister Tsipras, Prime Minister Costa, Prime Minister Muscat and Foreign Minister Borrell.

Tonight a working dinner of the leaders will take place at the Presidential Palace.
