25th High Schools Mathematics Competition’s Preliminary Stage Takes Place at EMU

Ugur Berkay Caliskan and Umut Zengin from 19 May Turkish Maarif College shared first place. Tugra Tolga Baki from the Famagusta Turkish Maarif College came second and ZekA Okaygun from the Nicosia Turkish Maarif College came third.

Organised by the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Arts and Sciences Faculty, Mathematics Department, the 25th High Schools Mathematics Competitionis preliminary stage which took place with the financial support of Onay Fadil Demirciler Education and Science Foundation was held at EMU on Tuesday, the 16th of April 2019 with the participation of 163 students from Bekirpasa High School, Bulent Ecevit Anatolian High School, ErenkAly High School, Famagusta Turkish Maarif College, Guzelyurt Turkish Maarif College, Hala Sultan Divinity College, Lapta Yavuzlar High School, Nicosia Turkish Maarif College, Namik Kemal High School, 19 May Turkish Maarif College, TED College Cyprus and 20 Temmuz High School. Before the competition commenced a presentation was delivered by Mathematics Department academic staff member Asst. Prof. Dr. Arran Fernandez. The preliminary competition took place in two categories (individual and group) and the following results were obtained from the individual category:

Ugur Berkay Caliskan and Umut Zengin from the 19 May Turkish Maarif College shared first place,

Tugra Tolga Baki from the Famagusta Turkish Maarif College came second,

ZekA Okaygun from the Nicosia Turkish Maarif College came third.

The Preliminary Group Competition

The 19 May Turkish Maarif College, Nicosia Turkish Maarif College and Famagusta Turkish Maarif College finished in the top three places of the group competition earning the right to directly compete in the finals. Bulent Ecevit Anatolian High School, TED College Cyprus and Guzelyurt Turkish Maarif College earned the right to compete in the semi-final stage of the competition. The team that finishes highest in the semi-final stage will be the fourth team in the final.

The semi-final competition will be taking place at the EMU Business and Economics Faculty Prof. Dr. Mehmet Tahiroglu Hall on Friday, the 26th of April 2019. The final will be taking place on Thursday, 2nd of May 2019 at the CL Building Mustafa Afsin Ersoy Hall. An award ceremony will be taking place after the final that will commence at 14:30.

As this year is the 25th year of the competition, the old and new principles of the schools that previously won the competition will be invited to the ceremony where they will be awarded plaques as well as the teachers in charge. Teachers who contributed in the event will also be awarded special awards.
