Spanish midfielder Iniesta to leave Japan’s Vissel Kobe in July

Spanish midfielder Andres Iniesta, a former Barcelona and Spain regular, will leave Vissel Kobe in July after five years in Japan, his club confirmed on Thursday. In a statement, Vissel Kobe said Iniesta, 39, will leave the club on July 1. “It’s always hard to say goodbye. I can only thank everyone for what I have experienced these 5 years in Japan. It has been an adventure that I will remember forever and in which I have learned and grown a lot. Thank you!” Iniesta said on Twitter. He added that the former Spanish international hopes to bid farewell to Japanese fans in Tokyo on June 6 after a friendly game against his ex-club Barcelona. Iniesta came through Barcelona’s youth academy and played for this club’s senior team in 2002-2018 to win nine Spanish La Liga titles, four UEFA Champions League titles, three UEFA Super Cups, and three FIFA Club World Cups. Mosque in Germany gets letter with neo-Nazi threats

A mosque in the central German city of Goettingen received a threatening letter with a Swastika and other neo-Nazi symbols, officials said on Thursday. Mehmet Ibrahimbas, chairman of the mosque association, said the letter contained racist and Islamophobic language, and had the neo-Nazi alias ‘NSU 2.0.’ ‘Our mosque community and Muslims in Goettingen are worried due to the continued threats of violence,’ he said, adding that it was the second threatening letter they received in several months. In September last year, unidentified suspects also painted a swastika on the wall of the mosque, which is run by the Turkish-Muslim umbrella group DITIB. ‘NSU 2.0’ refers to the National Socialist Underground, a neo-Nazi terror group uncovered in 2011 that murdered 10 people and carried out bomb attacks targeting immigrants. Germany has witnessed growing racism and Islamophobia in recent years, fueled by the propaganda of far-right groups, which have exploited the refugee crisis and attempted to stoke fear of immigrants. According to the latest data, police registered at least 610 Islamophobic hate crimes in 2022 across the country. Some 62 mosques were attacked between January and December last year, and at least 39 people were injured because of anti-Muslim violence. The figures also included dozens of hate crimes against Muslims, cases of intimidation, vandalism and property damage. A country of over 84 million people, Germany has the second-largest Muslim population in Western Europe after France. It is home to nearly 5 million Muslims, according to official figures.

3 of 4 cheetah cubs born in India 70 years after extinction die

Three out of the four cubs born in March to one of the eight cheetahs relocated from Namibia to India have died, officials said on Thursday. Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Jasbir Singh Chouhan, a top wildlife official in Madhya Pradesh state said the causes of the cubs’ deaths on Tuesday are multiple. “They were eight-week-old and underweight as well. The high temperatures, dehydration, and exposure to the sun” were some of the causes leading to the cubs’ death, he said, adding the temperature in the region reached around 47 degrees Celsius (116 Fahrenheit) this week. “The fourth cub is stable and under treatment,” he said, adding they are in touch with cheetah experts in Namibia and South Africa. In March this year, India announced the birth of four cubs to one of the eight cheetahs that were relocated from Namibia. In September last year, the fastest terrestrial animal was reintroduced into India, 70 years after it was formally declared extinct in 1952 due to massive hunting and poaching. Eight large cats from Namibia and 12 from South Africa have been so far shifted to Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, their new sanctuary. Out of 20 cheetahs, three have died so far. Earlier this month, a female cheetah called Daksha died at the Kuno National Park after it was injured by one of the big cats. Two more cheetahs, Sasha and Uday, died in February and April respectively, due to illness. While the government is confident that the translocation of cheetahs will be successful, many experts in the country have expressed skepticism about the government’s ambitious project to reintroduce them into Indian forests.

3 years after George Floyd’s murder, Biden urges Congress for police reform

US President Joe Biden marked the three-year anniversary of George Floyd’s murder by urging Congress to “enact meaningful police reform.” “I urge Congress to enact meaningful police reform and send it to my desk. I will sign it. I will continue to do everything in my power to fight for police accountability in Congress, and I remain willing to work with Republicans and Democrats alike on genuine solutions,” Biden said in a statement. Noting that equal justice is a “covenant we each have with one another,” Biden said: “Today, three years after George Floyd’s murder, let us build on the progress we have made thus far and recommit to the work we must continue to do every day to change hearts and minds as well as laws and policies.” “As a Nation, may we ensure that George Floyd’s legacy and the legacy of so many others we also honor every day are not solely about their deaths, but what we do to honor their memory,” he added. Floyd, 46, died on May 25, 2020, after Officer Derek Chauvin, 46, who is white, kneeled on Floyd’s neck as he repeatedly said he could not breathe. The 9-minute killing was captured on video and sparked protests across the country about police brutality and racial injustice. Biden recalled in the statement that Floyd’s young daughter Gianna told him the day before her father’s funeral that ‘Daddy changed the world.’ “Three years after her father’s murder, my answer to Gianna remains the same: he has,” Biden added. “George Floyd’s murder exposed for many what Black and Brown communities have long known and experienced — that we must make a whole of society commitment to ensure that our Nation lives up to its founding promise of fair and impartial justice for all under the law,” he wrote. “The injustice on display for the world to see sparked one of the largest civil rights movements in generations — with calls from all corners to acknowledge and address the challenges in our criminal justice system and in our institutions more broadly.”
