Cyprus deserves a better political leadership, far right leader Christou says submitting his candidacy

Cyprus deserves a better political leadership, which with its actions, will stand by the problems of society starting from the national issue, migration, the issues of the high prices, the issues of education and the serious issues of health, said the President of ELAM and candidate for President of the Republic Christos Christou.

In his statements after submitting his candidacy for the presidential elections, Christou stated that “we are addressing our fellow citizens, who are anxious for the future of our country and believe that until today those who ruled and co-ruled the country did not deliver what they should.”

Asked what is the realistic goal of his candidacy, he noted that the objective goal is always success. This is of course determined by being able to pass to the second round of the elections, he added. He continued saying that the second next goal is a strong ELAM, which will be able to influence the next government, whatever it may be, in decision-making. Replying to a question about what bargain he would strike to support another candidate in the second round Christou said that “we will bargain about nothing”. We will send both candidates, he added, our own positions on a number of issues, we will ask for their position and depending on this we will make our final decision, which we will publish.

He emphasised that the objective of his own candidacy in the upcoming elections is to solve the serious problems we face collectively as a society. “We believe that only a strong ELAM can ensure something like this,” he said appealing to the people for their support.

Member states agreed on coordinated precautionary approach in light of COVID-19 developments in China

The European Union member states agreed on a coordinated precautionary approach in the light of COVID-19 developments in China, the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the EU announced.

These decisions were taken during a meeting of the Integrated Political Crisis Response (IPCR) mechanism of the EU, in the presence of the Schengen Associated Countries.

Member States agreed to recommend to all passengers on flights to and from China to wear a medical mask, or FFP2/N95/KN95 respirators, as well as to issue advice to incoming and outgoing international travellers coming from or heading to China, as well as to aircraft and airport personnel, regarding personal hygiene and health measures.

Member states are also strongly encouraged to introduce, for all passengers departing from China to Member States, the requirement for a negative COVID-19 test taken not more than 48 hours prior to departure from China.

The Member States are encouraged to complement these measures with random testing of passengers arriving from China on arrival in the Member States, as appropriate, and the sequencing of all positive results to strengthen surveillance of the epidemiological situation, as well as testing and sequencing of wastewater from airports with international flights and aircraft arriving from China.

The IPCR, with the support of the ECDC and the EEAS, and taking into account WHO assessment, will continue to monitor the epidemiological situation in the EU and developments in China, including the level of data shared, with a view to ensuring EU coordination of any measures considered necessary.

The Member States agree to assess the situation and review the introduced measures by mid-January 2023.

Cyprus reunification and an economy that produces prosperity for the society, the main priorities of A. Mavroyiannis

Independent candidate Andreas Mavroyiannis submitted his candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic with a message of hope and prospects for the reunification of Cyprus and an economy that produces prosperity for the society and not profits for the few.

After thanking those who supported his candidacy with their signatures and the “thousands of people out there who expect progressive change in the country”, Mavroyiannis said that what is needed is “leadership that serves the country and not its own interests, with honesty and integrity, with transparency and accountability, and punishment of those guilty of the dozens of scandals that have disgraced Cyprus.”

Furthermore, the presidential candidate said he is demanding jobs with rights, business in a healthy environment, life with dignity, breakthroughs and reforms for the country. “For us this means progressive change. We have the vision, we have the plan, we have the people to make the demands and aspirations of society a reality,” he said.

Asked to comment on the President Anastasiades’ statement that he feels justified that three of his colleagues are candidates, Mavroyiannis said he has every right to feel justified. “I served for nine years as the President’s advisor on the Cyprus problem and together we made a great effort to bring the Cyprus problem to Crans-Montana. There is nothing wrong with that.”

Regarding the lifting of guarantees and the withdrawal of foreign troops, Mavroyiannis said that the Secretary General recommended in the six points the immediate lifting of guarantees and a logic of complete withdrawal of Turkish troops. “I personally was and am absolutely happy with the SG’s approach,” he noted.

We will bring progressive change with Andreas Mavroyiannis at the helm of the Republic, said AKEL Secretary General Stefanos Stefanou, after Andreas Mavroyiannis’ candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic was presented at the Filoxenia Conference Centre.

Stefanou also noted that the candidacy of Andreas Mavroyiannis is one that enjoys a widespread support. It is a demand, he added, of the vast majority of Cypriot society to change things in the country and they will change.

He added that with Andreas Mavroyiannis at the helm of the Republic of Cyprus, “we will end the downhill slide that Cyprus has been on for the last ten years, we will end the continuous slide towards partition, we will put an end to corruption that has taken off during the days of this government, we will end the degradation of institutions, we will embrace all those who need state care and who unfortunately have been marginalized during these ten years.”

I want to deliver to our children an honest state, said A. Demetriades

I want to deliver to our children an honest state, a green and united Cyprus, said Achilleas Demetriades, submitting his candidacy for the presidency of the Republic this morning at the “Filoxenia” Conference Center in Nicosia, where was accompanied by family members and supporters, including a little dog Sky.

Demetriades said that “this independent candidacy wants to give a voice to citizens who do not feel that the system expresses their views”, adding that “we need credibility. Those who led Cyprus to its current tragic position are part of the problem. They cannot be part of the solution,” he noted.

Dimitriades thanked “Titina Loizidou for nominating me. Erato Kozakou Markoulis, Alekos Modinos, Stavros Zenios, Popi Avraam and all the other friends and active citizens who support me”.

He said that “the future of Cyprus cannot be partition. We can prevent it. The European Union is the shield.” “Energy and the EU-Turkish relationship are the keys to unlocking the solution process”, said Demetriades. He added that “we must put an end to the corruption that exposes the country and offends us. With a real criminal investigation of the scandal of the golden passports. With separation of the responsibilities of the Attorney General. With control and transparency in the appointments of independent officials and with effective co-operation”.

“I want to serve my country. I don’t want it to serve me. I want to curb corruption that is everywhere. I want to give perspective to young people. I want one Cyprus and a green Cyprus. And I believe that it is in our interest to solve the Cyprus Problem and our first concern is an honest state in which all citizens can excel with equality,” he said.

Asked if he trusts the Attorney General and the Assistant Attorney General, Dimitriades stated that “the problem with the Attorney General is both institutional and with the specific persons. The institutional has to do with the need to separate his responsibilities to his legal advisor state and responsible for criminal prosecutions. That’s the general point.”

Titina Loizidou, known for her victory in the European Court of Human Rights against Turkey, who proposed the candidacy of Demetriades, said in her statement that “with Achilleas we are connected over a course of more than thirty years and judicial struggles, both at the legal level and in the political since my case touches political parameters”.

Former Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou Markoullis, said that “I am here because for me the Cyprus issue is above all in the programme of every candidate but also for the future of our country. I completely agree with the positions of Achilleas Demetriades regarding the Cyprus issue”.

Official candidacy submission process for Cyprus Presidency underway

Independents Andreas Efstratiou, Loukas Stavrou and Celestina De Petro were the three first candidates who submitted on Thursday, their candidacies for the Cyprus Presidency at Filoxenia Conference Center.

Andreas Efstratiou submitted his candidacy for the presidential elections for the eighth time. He was the first to submit his candidacy at 08:00 in the morning and came accompanied by his supporters, using a special means of transport for disabled people.

“As a person with many children, I will fight for my fellow human beings, the people with many children, the disabled people who are always left on the sidelines and whenever there are elections they are taken into account,” he said. He added that whoever the winner is, “we will respect him for the good of our country”.

The accession of the Republic of Cyprus in the Hellenic Republic and the opposition to representative democracy is promoted by the candidate for the Presidency, Loukas Stavrou, by filing his candidacy at the Chief Returning Officer.

“As National Community Reconstruction (EKAN) we submit a comprehensive proposal for the accession of the Republic of Cyprus into the Hellenic Republic. We will do it the same way Cyprus joined the EU: by directly integrating the National Guard into the armed forces of Greece – one nation, one army,” he said in his remarks after submitting his candidacy.

The belief that she will succeed in the Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus was expressed by Celestina De Petro, the first of only two women who are submitting their candidacy for the Presidential Elections.

In her short statements, De Petro noted that she loves the world, the Cypriots, and this, as she said, “is the biggest statement” she can make. In statements leaving the hall where the nominations are submitted, De Petro said that she is “here” for the people and to represent all Cypriots “until the end”. Asked about her expectations from this process, she said that it is to become President of the Republic, “for the good of Cyprus”.

The citizens want serious changes in the quality of democracy and in Cyprus problem, said G. Colocassides

The citizens are indignant and want serious changes both in the quality of democracy and in the Cyprus issue where we see a policy of appeasing Turkey which would result in a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation solution, independent candidate Giorgos Colocassides said on Thursday.

In statements after submitting his candidacy for the February presidential elections, he said that “I have submitted my candidacy as an independent citizen, I have not consulted with parties. I stand by the citizens, who are asking to finally see something different in this country.”

He noted that, “I am not going to bargain my honesty and my integrity with any party, I am not going to compromise with corruption.” This he said can be compared to the three candidates supported by political parties, “who are not simply supported by party leaderships, but they are also blessed by President Anastasiades.”

Asked if his candidacy would be more effective if he had the support of a political party, he said that “at this point, we are talking about fighting corruption that starts from the party scene. So, nominations embraced by the parties will have difficulty to bring about change. As I said before, we are looking for drastic change and this means that the citizen should vote following his conscience and not party dictates. Our homeland and our country comes first, not our party.”

Asked to comment on a statement by the President of DIKO that they chose Nikos Christodoulides as the honest and clean candidated, Colocassides replied that “Nikos Christodoulides comes from a government that is accused by everyone as a corrupt government. He served this government for years, identified with this government and to this day defends the record of this government. Let the citizens, who complain about the level of corruption we have in the country, judge this.”

Nomination process for the presidential elections goes smoothly, Chief Returning Officer says

The official nomination procedure for presidential candidates went smoothly and without any problems, said Chief Returning Officer Costas Constantinou after the completion of the process, which took place on Thursday at the Filoxenia Conference Centre in Nicosia.

He added that the 14 nominations have been approved by the Chief Returning Officer with his signature.

The candidates are: Andreas Efstratiou, Lukas Stavrou, Celestina De Petro, Christos Christou, Andronikos Zervides, Achilleas Demetriades, Alexios Savvides, Andreas Mavroyiannis, Georgios Kolokasidis, Averof Neophytou, Charalambos Aristotelous, Constantinos Christofides, Julia Khovrina Komnenos, Nikos Christodoulides.

Constantinou explained that, in accordance with the provisions of relevant law, a deadline of 6:00 p.m. is given for filing objections against any nomination on any of the grounds listed in Article 13(1) of the law.

Objections, he noted, may be lodged at the office of the Chief Returning Officer, Ministry of Interior. In the event that objections are filed, they will be considered and decided upon expeditiously and finally by the Chief Returning Officer, so that the nominations can then be finalized, he stressed.

He added that he is already in consultation with the Government Printing Office to prepare a draft ballot paper, which will be presented to the representatives of the candidates next Monday for any comments, and once it is finalised, the Government Printing Office will be instructed to start printing the ballot papers.

Responding to a question on the order of the names of the candidates on the ballot paper, the Chief Returning Officer explained that “by law, party candidates are ranked first in alphabetical order of parties, followed by independent candidates, again in alphabetical order.”

Further, when asked about Julia Hovrina Komninos, he clarified that she has submitted her candidature as a party representative.

Finally, referring to the number of candidates, he noted that the previous highest number of candidates was in 2013 with 11 candidates. “Therefore, today we have broken the record of 11 as we have 14 candidates,” he concluded.

Nikos Christodoulides says he is ready to govern Cyprus

He is fully ready for tomorrow’s governance of Cyprus, with the formation of a broadly accepted government, which will implement an ambitious program, says the independent candidate for the Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, who submitted his candidacy at noon.

Christodoulides arrived at “Filoxenia” Conference Center, in Nicosia, where the nominations for the presidential elections were submitted, accompanied by his wife Filippa Karsera Christodoulides and his four daughters, Ioanna, Ekaterini, Despina and Phoebe-Marina. His 18-year-old daughter Ioanna is the one who proposed her father’s candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic. Christodoulides was also accompanied by dozens of his supporters and the leaders of the parties supporting his candidacy, the President of DIKO, Nikolas Papadopoulos, the President of EDEK, Marinos Sizopoulos, and the President of DIPA, Marios Garoyian.

In his statement immediately after submitting his candidacy, Christodoulides said that all these months he talked to Cypriots and listened carefully to their concerns, worries and expectations for tomorrow’s governance of the country. “On the basis of these discussions, I have drawn up, with the contribution of dozens of worthy collaborators, a modern governance program that meets the expectations of Cypriot society, which will bring about changes and reforms, improving the daily life of all the Cypriot people and giving perspective and hope to everyone”, he said.

He added that “I am particularly happy for the participation and support of thousands of our compatriots, of all ages and ideological, party and socio-economic origins from all the towns and villages of Cyprus.” “I receive daily, as the leader of this great renewal effort, the warm and sincere support of thousands of our fellow citizens, and for that reason I am especially grateful,” he said.

He added that “now is the time of the citizens. It is the time of all Cypriots, of the many and not of the few, of unity and not of exclusion.” He invited all citizens, and especially young people, to participate in the presidential elections. “We move forward together with courage and determination to put into practice what we can and deserve. We have a specific plan to achieve a better Cyprus, a reunited homeland that offers conditions of security and prosperity to all its legal residents, to all communities and religious groups,” he said.

He thanked for the support and strength he received and receives every day and said that a month before the elections we are at the starting point of a process of renewing the country, and now through the joining of forces, we are moving vigorously towards the future we deserve. A future that will be more hopeful for everyone’s children, he added.

Asked if he believes that one month before the elections it is confirmed that he holds the lead and if his goals change in the last month before the presidential elections, Christodoulides said that he is optimistic based on the opinion polls that have come to light, but in absolutely no case has the result of the election been determined. He also said that “no vote should be wasted. Until the polls close, our effort continues.”

His daughter Ioanna Christodoulides, when asked about the fact that she herself is proposing the candidacy of Nikos Christodoulides, said that it is an honor for her to have this opportunity to propose her father, someone she loves and admires a lot, as she mentioned. She said she admires him because he has values, he is capable and she feels he is a modern leader. “Even those who do not support him should know that if he becomes President, he will be a President who unites and a President for everyone and for those who support him and for those who do not,” said Ioanna Christodoulides.

President of DIKO, Nikolas Papadopoulos called on people to support the independent candidacy of Nikos Christodoulides. In statements after the process, he noted that we must “build on what can take us forward” and “focus on what unites us.” Papadopoulos said also that he understands that problems such as “inflation, the migration issue, the desperation regarding the efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem” brought frustration and bitterness to the citizens.

The next presidential elections are of particular importance in a period of serious threats against our country but also of serious social and economic impacts from the crises we have been experiencing for the last fifteen years, said the President of EDEK, Marinos Sizopoulos. In his statements, he said that “it is for this reason that what the opponents of Nikos Christodoulides consider as a disadvantage we consider as an advantage, that is, joining of forces through a constructive cooperation which may lead to formulating and adopting the best possible proposals.

In his statements President of the Democratic Party (DIPA) Marios Garoyan said that we have entered the final stretch for the presidential elections. “The challenges are great for our country, the risks but also the opportunities offered. This is not the time for hatred and passions, this is not the time for divisions, this is not the time for pettiness, this is not the time for small party political goals,” he said. He added that “times are bad, that’s why Nikos Christodoulides rightly says from the beginning that Cyprus needs unity, consensus, compositions. No one has a magic wand that can solve problems on his own, no one has the ability to magically solve everything.”
