New Archbishop to be decided on Christmas Eve, Holy Synod announces

On Christmas Eve, the Holy Synod will elect a new Archbishop of the Church of Cyprus, it was decided on Thursday.

The election will take place after the Saturday’s Holy Mass, the members of the Holy Synod unanimously decided earlier today.

Speaking to the media after the meeting of the Holy Synod, Paphos Bishop Georgios, the caretaker of the throne said two objections that were submitted concerning Sunday’s elections were rejected after examination.

He also said the Synod ratified the results of the 18 December elections and the three candidates that form the triumvirate chosen by the people. Bishop Athanasios of Limassol secured the lead in Sunday’s electoral process for the new Archbishop, followed by Bishop Georgios of Paphos and Bishop Isaiah of Tamassos and Orini.

Asked if the church mechanisms are ready for Saturday’s election, the Paphos Bishop said the procedure is simple as there will only be voting among the members of the Holy Synod.

He also said that the Bishop who is elected will decide when the enthronement will take place. However, time will be given to allow other autocephalous churches to send representatives to attend the ceremony which will probably take place after Epiphany.

Bishop of Paphos could not comment reports about possible cooperation amongst bishops to elect a new archbishop. Saturday, he said, is only two days away, we will see, he added.

He added that “each and everyone has their own perception of what they will do on election day”.

Economic uncertainty in November remains at the same levels as in the summer months of 2022

Economic uncertainty in November remained at the same levels as in the summer months of 2022, according to the Economic Research Center of the University of Cyprus.

It says that during the last quarter, the level of uncertainty measured by the Cyprus Economic Policy Uncertainty index (EPU) is very close to that during the summer months much lower compared to spring, when economic uncertainty in Cyprus reached unprecedented levels due to the Russia-Ukraine war.

“During the last quarter, the level of uncertainty measured by the Cyprus EPU index is very close to that during the summer months. Specifically, the EPU index in August was 248.28, while in November it was 246.88, much lower compared to spring, when economic uncertainty in Cyprus reached unprecedented levels due to the Russia-Ukraine war”.

It adds that during the autumn of 2022, the EPU index was equal to 281.22, 256.67, and 246.88 in September, October, and November, respectively.

Uncertainty in September had a temporary small peak, partly due to the political instability in the United Kingdom, while in October and November uncertainty fell back to a lower level.

The Cyprus EPU index shows that uncertainty is still at higher levels compared to those during the pre-pandemic era, it points out.

The European EPU index is also rising during September. Contrary to the Cyprus EPU, the European EPU peak in September is relatively higher than the one in March due to the Russia-Ukraine war in spring.

Cypriots turn to digital payments, while maintaining the option of cash and check payments, CBC report says

The growing preference of Cypriots for digital means of payment, but also the desire to maintain the ability to pay with cash and checks, are the main conclusions of the report of the Central Bank of Cyprus on Retail Payments in Cyprus for the years 2014-2021, which was published on Thursday on the basis of data collected by the CBC on payment statistics and the publicly available report of the European Central Bank on the use of cash in 2016.

According to the report, Cypriots still perceive important to always have the option to pay with cash and cheques. Consumer preferences favour digital payment methods, as manifested by the following: the increased use of cards, which is mainly driven by debit cards. It says that in fact, Cypriots consistently choose debit over credit cards (2021: 84%; 2019: 77%; 2014: 66%).

It notes that access to cash is not as easy as in 2014, due to the reduction and consolidation of the banking sector. The number of banks’ offices decreased by 42% (2021: 260; 2014: 615) and the decrease in the number of automated teller machines (2021: 451; 2015: 526).

The report says that consumer habits indicate a clear preference for making purchases using cards at physical POSs (81%) rather than online. In specific it says that the pandemic had no major impact on the volume of card transactions (online or at physical POSs) and that the pandemic mainly affected the value of online card payments since 2019 with a sharp increase of 58% to EUR 2,9 bln in 2021 compared to EUR 1,9 bln in 2019. Card payments at physical POSs decreased by only 6% to EUR 3,7 bln in 2021 from EUR 4 bln in 2019.

It says that the aforementioned effect of the pandemic was only short-term, as the value of online card payments had stabilised in 2021.

The report says that e-commerce transactions using payment cards are gaining popularity and have increased by more than 5 times in volume and in value terms from 2014 up until 2021. The culture of using digital methods for retail payments is not yet as widespread in Cyprus as in the EU as a whole. In 2021, the average value per card transaction is almost twice the EU average (CY: EUR 60; EU: EUR 36).

Consumer behaviour for Cyprus’ population of just under one million citizens is shifting towards digital payment methods at double the pace compared with the EU average (5-year CAGR: 18% in CY vs 9% in the EU) the report notes.

It further points out that this is only expected because Cypriots still pay in cash and via cheques, therefore any shifts towards digital payments have a greater impact compared to the EU average and that the pandemic has accelerated profoundly this shift. Concluding, it notes that since 2019 digital payments have increased by 40% in Cyprus as opposed to 18% in the EU.
