First-time asylum applicants in EU show annual increase by 66% in April 2022

In April 2022, 54,145 first-time asylum applicants (non-EU citizens) applied for international protection in the EU Member States, up 66% compared with April 2021 (32, 570) and down 28% compared with March 2022 (74, 950).

According to Eurostat, the decrease from March to April 2022 can be attributed in large part to the decrease in Ukrainian first-time applicants (from 12,885 in March to 1,510 in April; -88%), whose numbers had increased in March due to the military aggression of Russia on Ukraine.

In April 2022, there were also 5,555 subsequent applicants (people who reapplied for asylum after a decision had been taken on a previous application). This was up 2% when compared with April 2021, and down 16% compared with March 2022.

House President commends diaspora efforts for a Cyprus settlement

The President of the Cyprus Parliament, Annita Dimitriou, called for full coordination of actions for the internationalization of the Cyprus problem, addressing on Tuesday the World Conference of Overseas Cypriots, organised by the organizations POMAK, PSEKA and NEPOMAK.

Speaking at the Conference, in Nicosia, Demetriou referred to the 48 years that have passed since the Turkish invasion and the escalation of Turkey’s criminal behavior with the creation of new fait accompli, with the attempt to settle the fenced off area of Famagusta, the threats of annexation of the occupied territories and the continuous and flagrant violations of international and European Law.

“We need unity, continuous struggle and commitment to the goal of reuniting our homeland through a just solution, based on the principles of International Law, UN resolutions and European principles and values, which will meet the expectations of all Cypriots”, said the President of the Parliament, adding that in order to achieve this goal, full coordination of actions “for the promotion of the rights of our country and the internationalization of the Cypriot problem” is needed. As she said, the Cypriot diaspora continuously strengthens these efforts, exerting pressure on the international decision-making centers, having achieved a positive outcome on issues concerning Cyprus several times.

In addition, the House President said that the Cypriot diaspora is the most authentic and vivid part of Hellenism, which through its valuable action, supports Cyprus in various ways.

Overseas Cypriots, men and women, despite the adversities of life they faced on their way, maintained unbreakable ties with their country, turning the love and nostalgia for the homeland into action, into a way of life that honours Cyprus and represents its interests, noted Demetriou.

Referring to the Youth of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (NEPOMAK), the President of the Parliament welcomed its active participation and the important role it plays in maintaining the national identity of “the most vital and hopeful part of our society”, as she said.

The goal of the House of Representatives, said Demetriou, is to strengthen and deepen the relations of young diaspora members with Cyprus, recognizing the creation of meaningful ties as the best investment for the future. At the same time, supporting the members of the diaspora in the challenges they face remains a priority, she added, especially while tackling the effects of the pandemic, which dealt a particularly heavy blow to the Cypriot community of the United Kingdom, but also in relation to the consequences of Brexit.

Demetriou concluded that it is an obligation “to provide to the new generation a united and free homeland, where all citizens will enjoy their self-evident human rights. Only in this way will we justify the struggles of the Cypriot people and secure the future, so that our youth lives and creates in a free, European and democratic Cyprus.”

Cyprus President disappointed that Turkey’s revisionism faces no consequences

Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades expressed his disappointment that Turkey faces no consequences for its revisionism, which leads to violations of other countries’ sovereign rights, while addressing on Tuesday the World Conference of Overseas Cypriots by the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK).

The President’s speech was delivered by the Minister of the Interior, Nikos Nouris, due to the President’s infection with COVID-19.

The President said that the current situation in the Cyprus issue must be seen in relation to the new geopolitical facts and the revisionism of Turkey.

He expressed regret that Turkey’s revisionism that faces no consequences, leads to the invasion of Syria and violations of the sovereign rights of countries in the wider Eastern Mediterranean region, such as Iraq, involvement in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the unacceptable claims against Greece.

He added that Turkey refuses to implement sanctions against Russia, has distanced itself from NATO, cooperates militarily with Russia but at the same time strengthens Ukraine’s defense capabilities. At the same time, he went on to say, through the agreement on the export of Ukrainian grain, Turkey presents itself as an honest mediator in the Ukrainian crisis.

“This is an insanity that once again demonstrates the anarchy of the international system and the fact that states’ behaviors are unfortunately determined by economic interests and not what the Charter of the United Nations dictates,” noted the President.

Despite this, he continued, “we insist and will continue to highlight the fundamental principles and values of international law for the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the UN members, the prevalence of peace and security and the respect for fundamental freedoms and human rights of all people”.

“And we highlight these principles in dealing with Turkish revisionism, whether they concern the violations in our Exclusive Economic Zone or the alteration of the status of the fenced off city of Famagusta, or the recent claim which essentially confirms Ankara’s permanent goals for a two-state solution”, he added.

At the same time, he said, “we continue to take initiatives that demonstrate our constructive stance for the immediate resumption of dialogue through the submission of bold Confidence Building Measures and the acceptance of the appointment of an envoy or high-ranking officials of the UN Secretariat to give a new mobility to the processes”.

He also said that Cyprus government will continue to highlight that the reunification of Cyprus is not only in the interest of the Cypriot people but also in the interest of the entire international community, since a solution will contribute in achieving and maintaining a necessary environment of stability, security and peace in the region, while strengthening EU – Turkey relations, EU-NATO relations but also the relations between Greece and Turkey.

The President further stated that “for us there is only one option: The achievement of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality, as defined in the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, which will lead to a functional and sustainable state.”

A solution, as he said, that will ensure the territorial integrity and full sovereignty of the country, will fully respect International Law and the European acquis and which will free the country from occupation armies and anachronistic guarantees.

He stressed that for this reason, he repeatedly called on the Turkish Cypriots to abandon the unattainable claims that serve Ankara’s ambitions and see the prospects offered by the possibility of a solution that would reunite Cyprus.

Furthermore, President Anastasiades said that he is deeply moved every time he is among the Cypriots of the Diaspora, assuring for the undivided support of the government to any actions and requests of overseas Cypriots.

Overseas Cypriots hailed as “a valuable capital” for the country, as World Conference of Cyprus Diaspora opens in Nicosia

The “tireless” efforts of overseas Cypriots, their love for their country, their successes and the progress they achieve in their countries of residence, have made them “the best ambassadors” of Cyprus abroad, Presidential Commissioner, Photis Photiou said on Tuesday in his speech at the opening of the World Conference of Cyprus Diaspora, in Nicosia.

Photiou said that this was an “important” day for everyone. “Your presence here confirms once again your ceaseless interest and steadfast love for Cyprus,” he said, referring to the organizations of overseas Cypriots, POMAK, PSEKA and NEPOMAK.

The Commissioner expressed the country’s “deep gratitude” for their multifaceted, as he said, contribution at the political, social and cultural level, “but especially in matters of promoting our positions on the national issue and strengthening our relations with governments and other decision-making centers in the countries where you reside at a time when Turkey with its provocative and illegal actions creates instability in the region and violates International Law”.

He said that POMAK, PSEKA, NEPOMAK, the Presidents, members and other executives of the federations of overseas Cypriots, were “a valuable capital” that always acts positively and in an enviable manner.

“The dynamism, patriotism, adherence to our principles, values and traditions, the tireless efforts in general and love for our country, the successes and progress you are making in your countries of residence, have made you the best of our ambassadors abroad,” he said.

Photiou also referred to the young overseas Cypriots and said that the government attaches particular importance to the issues concerning them and has introduced programmes to encourage their involvement in expat events and in the political affairs of their countries of residence, as well for a more frequent contact with Cyprus though learning the language, history and culture.

He also referred to the issue of the missing persons, and to the efforts made by expatriates to solve this humanitarian problem. Photiou appealed to the organizations to intensify their efforts, with the governments and powerful decision-making centers of their countries of residence, so that answers can be given to the relatives of these people who, are gradually dying without knowing what happened to their loved ones.

He also referred to the cooperation with friendly countries on Diaspora matters, and welcomed their representatives who will attend the conference, from Greece, Armenia, Serbia, and Romania. He also welcomed to Cyprus the Minister of Advanced Education of Alberta, Canada, Demetrios Nicolaides.

“Another Cyprus, beyond its physical borders, will continue to fight with stubbornness and determination in our countries of residence, until our homeland is freed from the Turkish occupation”, said on his part, the President of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK), Andreas Papaevripides, in his address.

Referring to a visit, members of the federations paid on Tuesday morning to the Paphos air base, he said that “we feel proud for the high level of preparedness and deterrence of the National Guard.” Addressing the political leadership, he requested additional funds for the purchase of UAVs.

Denouncing Turkish revisionism, POMAK’s President said it is time for Turkish Cypriots to “realize that it is in their own interest to break free from Turkey and work with us to achieve a just and functional solution, which ensures permanent peace and prosperity in a normal state, that is a member of EU, without anachronistic guarantees and intervention rights.

Philip Christopher, President of the International Coordinating Committee “Justice for Cyprus” (PSEKA), in his speech, focused on the Cyprus issue and said that this is the time for the Cyprus government to present “a specific and detailed plan that talks about energy, the exclusive economic zone, membership to NATO, that talks about the defence of the democratic values and the western world.”

The dilemma of the Cyprus problem, he said, has been the fact that, for 48 years “we have been talking about values” but the EU, US, and other countries are talking about geopolitical, military, economic interests with Turkey, pointing out that “this is the problem we need to solve.”

The President of the Youth of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (NEPOMAK), Christos Tuton, referred to the 20th anniversary since the establishment of NEPOMAK, and how this has changed the lives of many young Cypriots living abroad.

He paralleled the Russian invasion of Ukraine with the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and said that for Cypriots, this was far too familiar, as they went through the same pain as refugees, as relatives of the missing, “and as a people who want peace for our homeland.” He said that the fact that Nicosia is “the last divided capital city in the world”, is “unacceptable and a shame on the international community.” He also said that they will do all they can “to make it clear to our governments back home that if they do not stop Turkey’s illegal actions, then they are complicit,” as they cannot simply sit back and close their eyes as Turkey demands partition of the island and opens Varoshia, street by street. Tuton said they will fight for justice for Cyprus, freedom, and the end of the occupation.

Representing the Greek government, the Deputy Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, Zetta Makri, said that Hellenic and Cypriot Communities of the Diaspora play an important role in the inseparable relationship between Greeks and Cypriots, as they share common aspirations and “lay strong foundations for our continuity through education, our language and culture.”

Pafos Bishop Georgios also addressed the conference’s opening, representing Archbishop Chrysostomos II of Cyprus
