Tuesday’s UN reception a very informal, social event with no agenda, new UNSG’s Special Representative says

The UNSG`s new Special Representative and head of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Colin Stewart, has said that a reception which the UN will host at Ledra Palace on Tuesday, with the participation of both leaders in Cyprus, will be a very informal, social event with no agenda, that will give the leaders a chance to speak to each other and for him to get to know them better.

In statements to the media after a first meeting he had after his arrival to Cyprus, with Turkish Cypriot Ersin Tatar, Stewart said that they had a very good meeting, noting that “I am very much looking forward to a very close relationship.”

Stewart noted that he told Tatar that he wants to be helpful.

The Cyprus government has placed the protection and promotion of human rights as a top priority, announcing Cyprus’ candidacy as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the period 2025 to 2027, President Nicos Anastasiades said on Friday in a televised message to the Summit for Democracy that took place at the initiative of US President, Joe Biden.

Anastasiades said that to this end the government has undertaken a series of commitments. He noted that “these pledges are composed of three clusters: the first is the protection of children and education; the second is the advancement of gender equality; and the third is the dedicated protection of labour rights.

Authorities received more than 3,856 asylum seekers applications during October-November says Minister

Migration influxes to Cyprus Republic are unusual in the current period and the authorities have received more than 3,856 applications from asylum seekers in the months of October-November 2021, Interior Minister Nicos Nouris has said.

He added that the percentage of asylum seekers and eligible persons for international protection correspond to 4.4% of the population of Cyprus and that for the 5th consecutive year Cyprus is the EU Member state with the highest humber of applicants of international protection in relation to its population.

FAC will conduct a political discussion on the basis of Varosha options paper on Monday

No final decisions regarding the European Union`s response to Turkey`s actions in Varosha are expected during Monday`s meeting of the EU’s Foreign Affairs Ministers according to an EU official, who briefed journalists in Brussels ahead of the next Foreign Affairs Council (FAC). What is expected is a political discussion that will determine the next steps, the official added.

According to the EU official, Foreign Ministers will discuss the options and possibilities included in the document, prepared by the European External Action Service, which has been shared with the member states late last week.

‘Omicron’ variant traced in three samples in Cyprus

Three samples have tested positive for the “Omicron” variant in Cyprus.

A press release issued by the Health Ministry said that in the framework of the thorough and strict control which the Republic of Cyprus carries out in light of the “Omicron” variant, three cases with the “Omicron” variant have been traced in the framework of tests on samples of positive cases conducted by the Institute of Neurology and Genetics of Cyprus.

As it is noted all cases concern people who travelled abroad and were traced in Limassol district.

National COVID-19 Surveillance Report indicates increased activity of the virus

The particularly increased activity of SARS-CoV-2 infection is demonstrated on Friday through he National Surveillance Report.

The report notes that as of December 6th, 136,147 COVID-19 cases have been diagnosed, of which 606 died due to COVID-19 and a case fatality risk of 0.4%.

In the last 14 days (23 November – 6 December 2021), 6,685 cases were diagnosed with the median age 33 years and females slightly higher than men, at 50.5% (3,375) and 49.4% for males (3,303).

By place of exposure, information was available for 6,583 (98.5%) cases, of which 3.5% (231) were imported and 96.5% (6,352) were locally-acquired.

As of December 8th, 2021, 127 people were still hospitalized. The median age of patients still hospitalized due to COVID-19 is 65 years (55

Trade deficit up €408 million in the first ten months of 2021

?rade deficit rose by €408 million in January – October 2021 amounting to €4,235.8 mn compared to €3,827.3 mn in the corresponding period of 2020.

According to provisional data released Friday by the Statistical Service of Cyprus total imports of goods (from EU Member States and from third countries) in January – October 2021 amounted to €6,812.9 mn as compared to €6,235.7 mn in January – October 2020, recording an increase of 9.3%. Total exports of goods (to EU Member States and to third countries) in January – October 2021 were €2,577.1 mn compared to €2,408.3 mn in January – October 2020, registering an increase of 7.0%.

Total imports of goods in October 2021 were €703.4 mn as compared to €827.4 mn in October 2020, recording a decrease of 15.0%. Imports from other EU Member States in October 2021 were €479.4 mn and from third countries €224.0 mn, compar

A total of 662 new COVID-19 cases traced on Friday, no deaths reported, 138 patients in hospital

A total of 662 new COVID-19 cases were traced on Friday, according to Cyprus Health Ministry, with the number of cases rising up to 140,030. The positivity rate stands at 0.71%. No deaths were recorded and therefore the number of COVID-19 patients who have passed away remains 607.

Moreover, 138 COVID-19 patients are treated in hospital, of whom 47 in a critical condition. A percentage of 78.25% of those hospitalised have not been vaccinated.

Five post-COVID patients who have ceased to be contagious continue to be treated in a critical condition in an Intensive Treatment Unit, due to to COVID, and are intubated.

A total of 93,840 tests were carried out using the PCR method (9,817) and antigen rapid tests (84,023).

Out of the 607 patients who have died 389 are men (64.1%), and 218 are women (35.9%). Their median age is 75.8 year

Vaccination Portal open for 2nd dose of Johnson & Johnson vaccine appointments

Cyprus’ Ministry of Health announced that as of Friday 10 December 2021, the Vaccination Portal will be available for the arrangement of vaccination appointments with the 2nd/booster dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine against COVID-19, for individuals who have already been administrated the same vaccine.

Until now, citizens were able to be vaccinated with a 2nd/booster dose without an appointment at the walk-in vaccination centres. Citizens who are interested will be able to choose the Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine.
