House President meets with outgoing Greek Ambassador

Ηοuse President Annita Demetriou met on Monday with outgoing Ambassador of Greece Theocharis Lalakos.

 

Demetriou expressed her sincere thanks and appreciation to the Greek Ambassador for the very substantial work he has done and for the good cooperation between the House of Representatives and the Embassy of Greece, during his stay in Cyprus and wished him every success in his new duties at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic.

 

During the meeting, according to an announcement by the Parliament, the relations and the excellent cooperation between Cyprus and Greece and the Parliaments of the two countries were discussed and the upcoming visit of Demetriou to Athens, set for next October.

ECHR to give Tuesday its judgment on Vassiliou and Others v. Cyprus case

The European Court of Human Rights will be notifying in writing 15 judgments on Tuesday 31 August, including the Vassiliou and Others v. Cyprus case.

 

In a press release, the ECHR says that the case concerns the State’s responsibility for the applicants’ distress between the disappearance of a relative of them during the Turkish invasion in 1974 and his identification 26 years later.

CYPRUS RESPONDS TO COMMISSIO’S REQUEST TO ACCOMMODATE AFGHANS

Cyprus has informed the European Commission that despite the increased daily inflow of immigrants, the country could symbolically receive up to three Afghans, members of the same family, who have been cooperating with the EU in recent years.

 

According to CNA sources, the European Commission has asked all EU Member States to investigate the possibility of hosting Afghan nationals who have been cooperating with the EU in recent years.

 

Cyprus informed the Commission that due to the increased flows of migrants it receives on a daily basis and due to the fact that it has exceeded its limits in terms of accommodation and reception, symbolically and for humanitarian reasons, it could accept up to three people, members of the same family.

Portuguese expert in Cyprus soon for missing persons believed to be buried in landfill in Turkish occupied areas

A Portuguese expert and his team are expected in Cyprus in the next few days to examine whether it is possible to excavate a landfill in the Turkish occupied village of Dikomo to locate the remains of 70 missing persons from the village of Assia who are believed to have been buried there.

The missing persons were killed in the area of Ornithi and then it is believed that their remains were transferred and buried in the landfill in the 90’s. The Portuguese expert is the one who was presiding renovation and revamping works at the landfill which was covered with tons of ground and plastic and pipes were placed for the methane to be removed.

Police fines 22 individuals and 5 establishment owners over Covid protective measures violations

Police in Cyprus reported 22 individuals and 5 establishment owners or managers for violating measures aiming to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

A police spokesperson told CNA that in the last 24 hours that ended on 06:00 local time on Saturday, the force carried out 3,319 checks throughout the government-controlled areas.

In Nicosia, a total of 1,174 were carried out with 4 individuals and 1 establishment owner reported, in Limassol 185 checks were carried out with 7 individuals and 1 shop owner reported, in Larnaca 564 checks with 3 individuals and 1 shop owner reported, in Pafos 357 with 2 shop owners and 1 individual reported, in Famagusta 7 individuals were fined following 731 checks and in the Morphou region 146 checks were carried out with no fines issued.

Cypriot sailor Marilena Makri secured bronze in world ILCA U21 sailing championship (Correction in title)

Cypriot sailor Marilena Makri secured the bronze medal in sailing championships ILCA U21 taking place in Gdynia, Poland.

The 18-year old sailor of the Famagusta Nautical Club had her Olympic debut in the Tokio Olympics in July, while she won the gold medal in the European ILCA U21 championships held in Montenegro in June.

She finished third with a total score of 40 after nine races behind Italy’s Giorgia de la Valle and Ghiara Benini Floriani.

Temperature to reach 41 °C on Saturday, ‘red alert’ for risk of forest fires

The Department of Meteorology issued a “yellow warning” for extreme high temperatures, valid from 12:30 until 16:00 (local time) for Saturday, while the danger for forests fires remains on “red alert”.

The maximum temperature inland is expected to rise to around 41 degrees Celsius inland and 33 on the highest peaks, the warning said, the Cypriot Meteo said.

Furthermore, Cyprus` Forests Department announced that a “red alert” warning for risk of fire will continue to be in effect on Saturday, urging the public to refrain from activities that may cause a fire and to cooperate with the authorities.

Tokyo Paralympics Women’s final 50m freestyle S11 re-swim scheduled for Sunday

Cyprus reports one death, 213 new Covid cases, 152 people are in hospital on Saturday

Authorities in Cyprus reported one more death from COVID-19 and 213 new cases on Saturday. The positivity rate stands at 0.45%. At the same time 152 patients who have contracted the disease are in hospital, 59 of whom in a serious condition; 82.9% of patients have not been vaccinated.

In a press release the Ministry of Health said the deceased was an 85 year-ol man, who passed away at Famagusta General Hospital.

The number of deaths from the disease is 497, 323 or 65% men and 174 or 35% women. Their median age is 77. The number of cases reported since the outbreak is 113,069.

Forteen post-COVID patients are no longer infectious but continue to be treated in a serious condition due to the disease in ICUs, the Ministry of Health added.

Cypriot athlete finishes 7th in Women’s 67kg Powerlifting at the Toko Paralympics

Cypriot weight lifter, Maria Markou, finished 7th in Women’s 67Kg Powerlifting at the Tokyo Paralympics.

The 28-year old athlete from Limassol lifted 99kg in her best effort and finished 7th out of eight competitors.

In her first attempt she lifted 93 kg, 94kg in her second and 99 kg in her third attempt.

In press release, the Cyprus Paralympic Committee congratulated Markou and he coaches for her performance.

China’s Tan Yujiao took Gold with 133 kg followed by Egypt’s Fatma Omar with 120 and Nigeria’s Olaitan Ibrahim with 119 kg.
