UNSC unanimously adopts resolution renewing UNFICYP’s mandate, FM welcomes adoption

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted on Thursday the resolution for the renewal of the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). Resolution 2587 renews UNFICYP’s mandate for six more months until the 31st of January 2022.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the unanimous adoption of the resolution noting that in the resolution the UN Security Council reaffirms its Presidential Statement of the 23rd of July 2021 regarding the Turkish illegal actions in Varosha and condemns the Turkish President`s and the Turkish Cypriot leader`s statements on the 20th of July 2021, calling for the immediate reversal of all illegal actions that have taken place since October 2020 while reaffirming the relevant resolutions, with special reference to resolutions 550 (1984) and 789 (1992).

Extremely high temperatures to continue on Friday, says Meteorological Department

Extremely high temperatures will continue to affect the island on Friday, according to the Cyprus Meteorological Service which issued a yellow warning on Thursday.

The warning comes into effect from 2100 local time Thursday until 1700 Friday.

Tonight the minimum temperature will drop to around 27 degrees on the southeast and east coasts. Tomorrow the maximum temperature will rise to around 41 degrees inland and around 33 in the higher mountains.

Defence Ministers of Cyprus and Slovakia sign MoU in Nicosia [VIDEO]

Ministers of Defence of Cyprus and Slovakia held a meeting on Thursday in Nicosia during which they discussed

bilateral relations in the field of defence and security, the continuing tension in the Eastern Mediterranean region as well as the recent developments in Cyprus and the European Union.

Cypriot Defence Minister Charalambos Petrides and his Slovak counterpart Jaroslav Nad, who is paying an official visit to Cyprus,

also signed a Memorandum of Understanding which aims to establish general principles and procedures for the promotion of defence and military cooperation.

In statements after the signing ceremony, the Cypriot Minister expressed Nicosia`s appreciation for Slovakia`s invaluable contribution to the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, UNFICYP, with a Slovak Contingent for 20 consecutive years.

The goal of denouncing Turkish actions in Varosha at UN and EU has been achieved, Dendias says

The goal of denouncing Turkish actions in Varosha has been achieved both at the UN framework and at the level of the European Union, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said in a statement after briefing, on Thursday, the representatives of Greek parliamentary parties.

As he said, during the past week there has been intense mobilization by both Greece and Cyprus regarding the illegal Turkish announcements on Varosha, with both sides closely coordinating their actions.

“Our goal was the denouncement of Turkish actions both by the UN and the Security Council framework, and at the level of the European Union.

Nicosia welcomes unanimous renewal of UNFICYP mandate

In view of the final text of Resolution 2587, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the unanimous renewal of the mandate of the Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus until 31 January 2022, on the basis of Resolution 186 (1964), through the adoption today by the UN Security-Council of the aforementioned Resolution.

Security Council to adopt Thursday a resolution for the renewal of the mandate of UNFICYP (full text)

The UN Security Council is expected to adopt Thursday at 10 a.m. (local time) a resolution that will renew the mandate of UNFICYP for another six months, until January 31, 2022.

The final text, which was tacitly accepted and will be adopted by the plenary today, satisfies all the points raised by Nicosia, with the support of 14 of the 15 members of the Security Council (excluding Britain), especially concerning equal distance policy for the failure of the informal meeting 5 + 1, the basis of solution as provided by the resolutions of the Security Council and Varosha.

It should be noted that in the end of its term, UNFICYP mandate will be renewed again for 6 months and not a year as proposed by Britain.

Council of Europe calls for reversal of Turkish decisions on Varosha

The Council of Europe calls for the reversal of a Turkish decision to further re-open the fenced-off area of Varosha and hopes for renewed settlement talks in Cyprus, while expressing readiness to support UN efforts in this respect.

In a declaration issued on Wednesday, the Council of Europe’s Secretary General, Marija Pejcinovic Buric, expresses concern by the announcements of the President of Turkey and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community on 20 July regarding the further re-opening of the fenced-off area of Varosha.

“Such unilateral action is regrettable as it would be in contradiction with the relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions which are fully recognised by the Council of Europe.

There should be no complacency regarding COVID-19 vaccinations, Health Commissioner warns

There should be no complacency regarding COVID-19 vaccinations, warned on Thursday European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Cypriot Stella Kyriakides, in remarks at Paralimni.

Kyriakides visited the COVID-19 Reference Hospital, accompanied by Permanent Secretary of the Health Ministry, Christina Yiannaki, where she thanked the staff for their work.

Kyriakides said that more than 70% of the adult population in the EU have been vaccinated with the first dose and 57% with the second, however, there should be no complacency, she added because the Delta variant is prominent in all EU countries.

Target for vaccination numbers at “Walk-In” centres to be met by August, Health Ministry official says

Vaccinations against COVID-19 as part of the “Walk-In” programme initiated by the Health Ministry have surpassed eight thousand and is believed by the end of August the targets set will be met, according to the Ministry. At the same time, 970,000 vaccinations have taken place in Cyprus.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Christina Yiannaki in statements on Thursday expressed satisfaction at the number of vaccinations through the “Walk-In” system and said she believes that in August targets will be met.

Infrastructure and natural gas supply process to be concluded by end of 2022, Minister says

Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry Natasa Pilides said on Thursday that Cyprus` main goal is the completion, by the end of 2022, of the infrastructure development project and the natural gas supply process in the domestic market of Cyprus for energy generation.

Addressing an event by the Cyprus Electricity Authority, the Minister welcomed the fact that the EAC has signed an agreement with the Natural Gas Public Company (DEFA) and paid 43 million euro for its participation in the share capital of the Natural Gas Infrastructure Company (ETYFA) which corresponds to a percentage of 30%.

She noted that Cyprus has achieved since 2018 the national target for the use of Renewable Energy Sources at 13% in 2020, adding that “we are working to set much more ambitious targets, which will allow us to be consistent in our commitment within the European Green Deal
