Cyprus MP in virtual meeting of IPU

  Cyprus parliamentarian Skevi Koukouma, member of the Cypriot delegation to the Inter-parliamentary Union attended on Tuesday a virtual meeting of the committee on democracy and human rights related to the international law on child sexual exploitation online.

 

The meeting is held in the framework of the 142nd General Assembly of the IPU to take place 24 -27 May.

 

In her intervention Koukouma noted that child exploitation online is increasing and there needs to be a holistic approach including law enforcement and sex education.

President: 1.18 bln euros in five years to protect the environment and promote green economy

  Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, said on Wednesday that a total of 1.18 billion euros will be spent in a period of five years to protect the environment and promote green economy.

 

Speaking during a visit he paid to the premises of the Cyprus Environmental Industries recycling unit, accompanied by Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Minister, Costas Kadis, Anastasiades said that the second pillar of Cyprus Recovery and Resilience Plan concerns “the push we want to give in order to speedily move on with the green economy”, adding that the emphasis given in this field is reflected in “the amount of money that we requested to be disbursed.

National Recovery Plan main issue on election campaign on Tuesday

  The National Recovery Plan which was presented by President Anastasiades on Monday and was tabled to the European Commission the same, was the focus of the election campaign on Tuesday. Issues of social policy and defence matters were also included in statements by political parties.

 

President Anastasiades replied to criticism by DIKO President on the plan saying that is is high time that everyone realise that cooperation is needed for the country to move forward.

Cyprus vaccination portal accessible again for 61 – 65 year-olds

 Cypriot residents aged 61 – 65 who did not previously book their vaccination appointment have the opportunity to do so again on Wednesday and Thursday.

 

In particular, the vaccination portal is open for that age group from 0730 hours today until 1730 hours tomorrow.

 

According to the vaccination appointment plan announced last week the portal will open again for the age group 46 – 49 on Friday at 0730 and will remain accessible until 1730 on Saturday.

Technical Committee on Health to discuss uniformity of COVID measures at crossing points

  The bicommunal Τechnical Committee on Health will hold a virtual meeting on Friday to discuss the need for uniformity in measures at crossing points in Cyprus, Greek Cypriot co-president of the Committee Leonidas Phylactou told the Cyprus News Agency.

He said that the members will discuss how common measures will be applied at crossing points based on epidemiological figures and criteria. According to Phylactou, the Greek Cypriot side tabled certain suggestions last month and wants to hear the suggestions by the Turkish Cypriot side, so that a joint decision can be taken.

Indian and South African variants detected in Cyprus, infected people had no contacts authorities say

  Authorities in Cyprus announced that the Indian coronavirus variant was detected in four samples and the South African variant in two, adding however that the infected people had arrived in the country from third countries, were in mandatory quarantine and when they tested positive had been transported to a special isolation premises and had been in contact with no one. At the same time, the British variant continues to be present in the community.

In a press release on Wednesday, the Ministry says that it has been informed by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics (CING) that following specialised tests on positive samples of the SARS-CoV-2 virus mainly during April, the British variant was detected in 131 samples, the Indian variant in 4 samples and the South African variant in 2 samples.

Ministry announces 135 new coronavirus cases, 148 patients in hospitals

   The Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday that 148 COVID 19 patients are receiving treatment in state hospitals, 47 of whom in a serious condition.

Moreover, 135 new coronavirus cases were detected out of 44,312 tests, (positivity rate stands at 0.30%). Since the outbreak of the pandemic there have been 71,533 coronavirus infections in Cyprus.

No deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours and their number remains at 348, (231 men or 66% and 117 women, or 34%). Their median age is 77,5.

Out of the 47 patients who are in hospitals, 29 are intubated. In the Famagusta General Hospital there are 29 patients, 59 are in the Nicosia General Hospital, 38 in the Limassol General Hospital, while 9 are receiving treatment in the Larnaka General Hospital, 11 in the Pafos General Hospital and 2 are in the Makario Hospital in Nicosia.

The European Parliament notes Turkey’s backsliding and recommends formal suspension of accession negotiations

  The European Parliament, “notes with serious concern that in recent years, although Turkey is a candidate country, its government has pursued a continuous and growing distancing from EU values and standards”, according to its report on the accession process, that is under vote today in the plenary (results to be announced at 19:00 local Brussels` time).

The report calls upon the Commission to recommend, “in line with the negotiating framework from October 2005, the formal suspension of accession negotiations with Turkey, in order for both sides to review in a realistic manner and through a structured and comprehensive high-level dialogue, the appropriateness of the current framework and its ability to function, or, if necessary, to explore possible new models for future relations”.

Police report 15 individuals for violations of COVID-19 measures

 Police reported 15 individuals for violations of COVID-19 measures in a total of 4,601 checks across the island the last 24 hours.

 

A press officer from the Police Press Office told the CNA that in Nicosia the checks were 1,143 and 1 person was fined, in Limassol 8 people were reported in a total of 918 checks while in Larnaka in 566 checks the Police fined 3 people.

 

In Paphos 337 checks were carried out and 1 individual was fined and in Famagusta in a total of 681 checks, 2 people were fined.
