The Department of Electronic Communications, of the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy of Cyprus and the General Secretariat of Telecommunications and Post of the Ministry of Digital Governance of Greece, would like to invite the submission of comments to the following Request for Information:”Request for Information (RFI) for a new Submarine Cable Link between Cyprus and Greece”.

Police book 18 individuals for violating measures against COVID-19

Cyprus police handed out fines to 18 individuals during the last 24 hours, for violating measures aiming to contain the spread of COVID-19.

 

A police spokesperson told CNA that a total of 4,455 checks were carried out island-wide.

 

In Nicosia the police carried out 1,236 checks and booked 1 person, in Limassol 750 checks and reported 13 individuals, in Larnaca 580 checks with no reports, in Pafos the police reported 3 people after conducting 613 checks and in Famagusta 478 checks were carried out with no reports.

Vaccination Portal to open soon for all ages, AZ reschedule of appointments to begin Thursday, Minister says

Vaccination Portal will open for all ages the next days and next Thursday citizens who were vaccinated with AstraZeneca and eight weeks have passed, will be notified for a reschedule of their appointment for the 2nd dose, Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou said on Tuesday.

 

Speaking during a press conference the Minister said that the aim to cover 65% of the population with the 1st dose by the end of June seems to be achievable, adding that since yesterday 45.2% of the population (334,258 citizens) got the 1st dose and 15.

Appointments for COVID-19 vaccinations for 18-21 age group surpass 10,000

People belonging to the 18-21 age group arranged more than 10,000 appointments for COVID-19 vaccination through the Cyprus Vaccination Portal.

 

According to the Ministry of Health, a total of 10,700 appointments have been booked, from the 15,920 that were available for the specific age group. The Vaccination Portal opened Monday and closed on Tuesday, at 5.30pm (local time).

 

Minister of Health Constantinos Ioannou said earlier, on Tuesday, that the goal to cover 65% of the population with the first dose by the end of June is attainable. He noted that 45.2% or 334,258 people received the first dose by Monday while 15.5% or 114,476 completed their inoculation.

Wastewater analysis shows low usage of illicit substances in Cyprus

Cyprus presents a low usage of illicit drug substances, says a study on urban wastewater analysis in both the EU and non-EU countries, carried out in April 2020, when lockdown measures were imposed in a bid to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

 

According to a press release issued by the University of Cyprus and the Cyprus National Addictions Authority (CNAA), among the five illicit substances under examination, cocaine usage was quite low among the preferences of Cypriots, amphetamine usage is low, while Nicosia and Limassol are among the cities with the lowest usage of ecstasy (MDMA).

 

The sampling in Cyprus was carried out by the University of Cyprus’ “Nireas” International Water Research Centre with funding by the CNAA and its results were published in the study of the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA).

The European Commission announced that it has received the official recovery and resilience plan from Cyprus

The European Commission announced that it has received the official recovery and resilience plan from Cyprus, which sets out the reforms and public investment projects that Cyprus plans to implement with the support of the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF).

 

Cyprus has requested €1 billion in grants and €227 million in loans under the RRF.

 

The Cypriot plan is structured around the five policy areas:

 

– public health and civil protection;

 

– the green transition;

 

– economic resilience and competitiveness;

 

– the digital transition and

 

– the labour market, education and human capital.

Justice Minister signs joint statement of 14 EU states for LGBT+ people

Cyprus Justice Minister Emily Yiolitis has signed on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus a joint statement of 14 EU member states on the occasion of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia.

 

The joint statement stresses the need for the European Union to remain an area of respect for human rights, freedom and security for LGBT + individuals.

 

According to a press release by the Ministry of Justice, in their joint statement the 14 Member States stress that everyone must live in freedom and security within the Union and enjoy their human rights and freedoms.

Prodromou participated in the Education, Youth, Culture and Sport Council in Brussels

The Minister of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth, Prodromos Prodromou, took part in the EU Council for Education, Youth, Culture and Sport deliberations, that took place Monday and Tuesday in Brussels under the Portuguese Presidency.

 

According to a written announcement of the Ministry issued after the Council wrapped up its work, during the first day of the work of the Council, the Ministers focused on the issues of education and youth and the scenarios for the transformation of higher education in the EU.

 

In his speech, the Minister of Education, referring to the innovative initiative “European Universities”, noted that Cyprus actively participates in this program through its two public universities and supports the efforts made for financial support and further expansion of the program.
